Wicomico County Council Public Budget Hearing

The Wicomico County Council will hold a Public Hearing to receive input on the County Executive’s updated proposed Capital Improvement Program at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 7 in Council Chambers of the Government Office Building. The revised Capital Improvement Program covers the period from July 1, 2019 through June 30, 2024.

Bayside Championship Games

Bayside Baseball Championship: South champ Mardela High vs North champ Colonel Richardson, 6 p.m. at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium. Tickets $5 for ages 7 and up, cash only. (Only MPSSAA passes accepted for admission.)

Tennis: James M. Bennett High hosts the Bayside Championships for boys and girls tennis, with girls playing at 4 p.m. vs Kent Island, and boys playing at 5:30 p.m. vs Easton. At the tennis courts off Onley Road.

Advanced Placement (AP) tests for students who have signed up to take the tests at the end of an AP course

Schedule for testing distributed in each school

Wicomico students who are registered to take one or more AP (Advanced Placement) tests should remember to check the schedule for testing information for the AP testing window of May 6-17. The schedule is posted in Naviance, athttps://www.wcboe.org/domain/2238, and listed below. Please note that in addition to the testing schedule provided below, Mardela High School students will take their AP tests at Mardela High; please check with Mrs. Shiles.

Test takers are reminded to arrive early for their tests so they can be in their seat on time and ready to go when the test begins. Students should also remember that phones are not permitted in the building during AP testing; anyone found with a phone will have the phone confiscated and their test results voided.

Employees of Wicomico County Public Schools who are reaching a five-year milestone of 15 years or higher will be recognized at the annual Service Awards banquet on Wednesday, May 8 at 6 p.m. at Black Diamond Lodge in Fruitland. Those being recognized received invitations, and they will be recognized at the banquet if they RSVP’d that they would be able to attend. For those unable to attend, as well as those reaching the 5-year or 10-year mark, the recognition will be presented later at the school or workplace.

James M. Bennett Auditorium Parking Lot

The James M. Bennett Class of 2021 will be hosting a Ford Drive One 4UR School Event on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. JMB Auditorium parking lot. There will be a Chinese Raffle, 50/50 raffle, and a Silent Auction. Come out and test drive a new Ford car and fill out a survey, and the Ford Motor Company will donate $20 to James M. Bennett Class of 2021.  Plus, while you wait, get your own car washed for a donation of your choice. Hot dogs, chips and drinks will be available for purchase as well. We have so many activities going on at the school that day, and we look forward to having you come out for a special day. The CARPE DIEM Destination Imagination team that represents Parkside and James M. Bennett high will have a car wash from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 11 at Pemberton Coffeehouse to raise money for its trip to Global Finals. While your car gets washed ($7 donation suggested), grab some coffee, breakfast or even Chesapeake Bay Farms ice cream (10% of all ice cream sales go to team). The team will also have $25 How Sweet It Is gift cards for sale, with the team receiving $5 for each gift card sold. Community Conversation for Youth Ages 14-22 on Mental Health

JMB sophomore Grace Acle, the Lower Shore representative on the Maryland Youth Advisory Council, will host a Community Conversation on mental health and reducing the stigma around mental illness at the Downtown Salisbury Visitor’s Center at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 11, after the eRace the Stigma 5K race. Young people ages 14-22 are invited to come and share their thoughts, and to learn about applying to represent youth on the Advisory Council. VFW Meuse Post 194 in Salisbury is hosting a Spaghetti Dinner Fundraiser on Saturday, May 11 to raise money for the Global Finals- bound DI teams NSS Mustache Mustangs, SMS Panicking Penguins and Parkside/JMB Carpe Diem. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Donna C. Hanlin will hold a Superintendent’s Open Door Session from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, May 15 in the Wicomico County Public Schools building, 2424 Northgate Drive (behind Lowe’s), Salisbury.  Open Door Sessions throughout the 2018-2019 school year provide the opportunity for people to meet one-on-one with the superintendent to express concerns, offer comment, or ask questions on any issue involving Wicomico schools. No appointment is needed. Each visitor will have approximately 15 minutes to meet with the superintendent. Do you need information about the college admissions process? Do you want to find out how to make your college application stand out?  A member of the admissions team from the University of Maryland College Park will share information with all interested high school students and parents about the college admissions process and how to make your application stand out on Thursday, May 16 in the cafeteria at James M. Bennett High School from 6:30-8 p.m. This is a great opportunity for students and parents to hear information about the college admissions process. This ParentUniversity session will be particularly valuable for high school juniors and their parents, but the session will be beneficial for students and parents of Grades 6 and up.

“Junior Benefit” for Beaver Run Elementary Student Battling Cancer

Market Street Inn

Junior was 4 years old in November 2017 when he was diagnosed with Stage IV Hepatoblastoma, a rare childhood liver cancer. He courageously endured countless hours of chemotherapy and several surgeries, and as of September 2018 his cancer appeared to be gone. Unfortunately the cancer has returned to his lungs, and the flight for his life is continuing, with his family, friends, school and community all on his team. Please support Beaver Run Elementary student Junior in his second battle against cancer by enjoying a meal at Market Street Inn on Thursday, May 16 from 4-9 p.m. or Sunday, May 19 from 3-8 p.m. On both of those days, Market Street will donate to Junior’s family 50% of food proceeds for dine in or carry out orders. Thursday is a “superhero birthday day,” as Junior turns 6. Sunday will be a family fun event with a bounce house, face painting, and more. Please come out to a Car & Motorcycle Show on Friday, May 24 to support the Wicomico Middle School Band. The event will take place at Parkway Church of God, across the street from Wicomico Middle. Registration is at 4:30 p.m. for participating cars and motorcycles, $10 registration fee. There will be dash plaques for the first 75 vehicles. The June Birth to Five Playgroup event for Wicomico County children ages birth to 5 will be at the Salisbury Zoo at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 5. Playgroups are free to attend. Wicomico County’s secondary summer school programs will be housed at James M. Bennett High School and will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. July 1-Aug. 9 (closed July 4 and 5). Secondary summer school programs included in the registration are Remedial Credit Summer School for middle and high school, and Honors original credit classes in Honors Chemistry, Honors Algebra II, and Honors Geometry. Registration for all secondary summer school programs will take place at James M. Bennett High School from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 25 26 and 27.

Remedial Summer School: Remedial summer school courses for middle and high school students. Students must bring in a copy of their latest report card to register. (Schools will mail report cards on June 20.) Students may take one or two courses as needed. The charge per course for Wicomico County students is $25/$50/$100 (Free/Reduced/Paid Meals). Out-of-county students pay $160 per course.

Original Credit/Honors Session: Original credit classes in Honors Chemistry, Honors Algebra II, and Honors Geometry. Students who enroll in an original credit summer course can make room in their school schedule for special programs like JROTC, CTE and VPA, and expand the number of math, science and/or AP courses they can take. The charge per course for Wicomico County students is $50/$100/$200 (Free/Reduced/Paid Meals). Out-of-county students pay $325 per course. Please visit your guidance counselor for a yellow form prior to registration.
