Salisbury Rotary and Sunrise Rotary Provide Bookcases for 22 Wicomico County High School English Classrooms
Wicomico County Public Schools greatly appreciates the generous support of Salisbury Rotary and Salisbury Sunrise Rotary, which worked together to secure funding for new bookshelves in 22 high school English classrooms. The bookshelves will be an important part of school system literacy initiatives and will make books more available in English classrooms for all high school students.
On Nov. 16, Rotary representatives visited an English classroom at Parkside High School to see one of the new bookcases in use. Representing Rotary were Katherine J. McAllister, President of Salisbury Sunrise Rotary; Mark L. Granger, President of Salisbury Rotary; and Ford C. Waggoner, a member and District Grant Director of Salisbury Rotary. The local Rotary Clubs secured partial funding for the bookcases from District 7630 Rotary Foundation.
Since the fall of 2014, one of the major goals of Wicomico’s English instructional program has been to provide accessible classroom libraries which allow for increased volume of reading, differentiation, inclusion of nonfiction texts, and the pairing of texts as teachers work with students to meet the rigorous text demands of the Maryland College and Career Ready Standards.
“Each year, teachers have been given funding to purchase high interest novels for students and the classroom collections have grown,” said Ellen Bradford Harlan, Supervisor of English and World Languages for Wicomico County Public Schools. “This created a need for bookcases on which to store and display the novels that are available to students. Rotary’s hard work and generosity in providing funding for bookcases in 22 English classrooms is greatly appreciated. Many students will benefit from having easy access to books.”
