School Status Update: 3/12

Good evening, students, families and staff of Wicomico County Public Schools. This is Dr. Donna Hanlin, Superintendent of Schools with an important message. Late this afternoon, the State Superintendent of Schools ordered all Maryland public schools to close from Monday, March 16th through Friday, March 27th as part of the state’s effort to slow the spread of coronavirus COVID-19 infections. Any events that were scheduled for schools or in schools during that time period have been canceled.

This means that Friday, March 13th is the only day of school between now and Monday, March 30th. Students: Please make sure that when you leave school tomorrow, you take with you any personal belongings or school materials you might need during this two-week shutdown. At this point, teachers and school staff: please do the same, making sure your classroom or office surfaces are cleared. During the two weeks that schools are closed, school buildings and school buses will be deep cleaned following recommended cleaning procedures for dealing with the coronavirus.

As we get further clarification on details regarding this closure, we will share additional information with staff regarding  work schedules for the various employee groups.

The current plan is for Maryland schools including Wicomico to reopen on Monday, March 30th.  Additional information will be forthcoming on if and how these days will result in additional calendar changes.

Please know that the situation can change rapidly, sometimes day to day and sometimes minute to minute. Please expect that there will be updates as we share new information, and address questions that arise.

As Governor Hogan said this afternoon in his address, the coronavirus crisis has escalated rapidly and dramatically. This and many other measures will be key to slowing the spread of COVID-19, protecting people and saving lives.

Thank you for your understanding in these challenging times.
