Courtney Deason, 2014 - 2015 Parent Involvement Matters Award Semi-finalist, Wicomico County Public Schools
[with her son Anderson at the 2014 PIMA reception]
Ms. Courtney Deason, parent of a student at Wicomico Middle School, is Wicomico County’s PIMA winner for the 2014 - 15 school year. PIMA (Parent Involvement Matters Award) is sponsored by the Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) and recognizes a parent from each local school district for that parent’s commitment to the success of students. Ms. Deason has demonstrated that all students matter to her and set about to establish a culture of family involvement at the school.
is a liaison between the school and business community. She championed
the needs of the school with her employer who has provided meals for
school events and encouraged employees to volunteer. She recruited work
colleagues and parents to provide and serve an evening meal at the
school’s annual “Arts in the Park” event.
The Arts in the Park Event is an integral parent of the School Improvement Plan. It is held in the spring of each school year; the Arts Integration Committee celebrates Earth Day and displays art projects in the city park. There was a strong need to include the arts across each content and curriculum.
Ms. Deason is currently working with her employer to build a partnership with the Rivers Edge Art Community project which is slated to offer plays, art lessons, theater performances, an artist area and a gallery for children and adults.
She also helped with the 6th grade Welcome event. Each year incoming 6th
graders and their families have a ’welcome to Wicomico Middle’ evening,
where parents learn how to continue to be involved in their children’s
academic success, and students find out about courses and activities
specific to middle school.
Mrs. Kelly Morris-Springston, principal, said: "Our school has benefited from both projects and looks forward to building a relationship between the school and community."
Ms. Deason was also active in developing the ‘snack pack’ program, collecting food items so that families would have meals for an entire weekend. In addition, she helped to organize a school supplies drive for the beginning of the school year.
She creates and participates in projects such as these to promote the goals of increasing parent involvement and expanding community involvement with the school.
Congratulations to Ms. Deason on being the 2014 - 15 Parent Involvement Matters Award winner for Wicomico County Public Schools.
