Activity 1:  Letters & Name Puzzles at Home

Skill:  Students are familiar with letters in their name.  Students can order the letters in their name and write their name correctly.

Materials to Collect at Home: Cardboard pieces from boxes found at home (cereal boxes, pop tart boxes, plastic baggie boxes, etc…); scissors; marker or crayon

Directions:

1.  Cut out puzzle pieces from boxes at home (make sure each piece is different so they can be matched)
2. For each of the letters in your child’s first & last names, write an uppercase letter on one side of the piece and a lower case letter on the other side, then make a cut so that the letters can be matched. 
3. Have your child match the upper and lowercase letters.
4. Have your child spell their first name using the letters.   Make sure that students use an uppercase letter at the beginning of their name and the rest lowercase letters. 
5. Have your child write their first name on a piece of paper. Continue to practice over and over.

Activity 2:  Beginning Sounds & Order Objects by Size Scavenger Hunt

Skill:  Students will identify beginning sounds of objects

Materials to Collect at Home:  Gather items from around your house (examples:  glasses, remote, rock, leaf, egg, box, sock, etc…); 1 piece of paper; crayons or markers

Directions:

1.  Using one piece of paper, fold the paper in half lengthwise.  Then fold it in half again 2 more times.
2. Write the uppercase and lowercase letter for each letter in the alphabet in each box.
3. Using the items you found around your house, have your child find an item that begins with a particular sound.  Then have them place the item on the letters that the item begins with.
4. Using the items, order them by size:  Smallest to largest, Largest to smallest, Order by height (shortest to tallest and tallest to shortest), Order by weight (lightest to heaviest and heaviest to lightest)
5. Using the items, sort them by color and shape

Activity 3:  Comparing Environmental Print

Skills:  Students will be able to use environmental print to associate letters with letter sounds, blending sounds, writing numerals and matching numbers to sets.

Materials to collect at home:  Index cards; marker or crayon; cut out print from products you have purchased from the store; a piece of construction paper or a cushion to use as a work mat

Directions:

1. Cut out words from products that are around your house.  Use a piece of construction paper or a cushion from home to use as a work mat.
2. Select a cut out word. Ask your child a series of questions as you use the different words.  The questions may include the following:

• How many letters are in this word?  Have the students say the letters in each word.  Then, have the student count each letter in the word.  Next, the student writes the number on a small piece of paper and places it next to the word. Continue with all the other words.
• Which word is the smallest word?
•  Which word has the most letters or greatest number? Put the words and numbers in order from least to greatest. What number is the least, it will come first.

Activity 4:  Pool Noodle Numbers

Skills: Students will be able to match a number with sets of objects.

Materials to Collect at Home:  Sidewalk chalk, pool noodle (if you don’t have a pool noodle at home, students can hop to numbers)

Directions:

1.  Find a safe pavement outside where you live.  Draw 10 large circles on the pavement.  Write a number between 1 -10 in each circle.  Your child will then be asked to find a certain number.  They will walk to the number and hit the number with the pool noodle that many times.  Example:  You say, “Find the number 8”.  Your child walks to the number “8” and hits the number “8”, 8 times.  If you do not have a pool noodle at home, your child can walk to the number you give them, and have them either clap or hop that many times.   They can also hop to the number that you ask them to find.
2. To extend this activity, they can either use the pool noodle to hit the numbers in the circles or they can clap or hop if you don’t have a pool noodle at home.  Here are some questions you can ask your child:

• Can you hop to a number that is one more than 1?  They should hop to the number “2”.  Once on the number, they can hop or clap that many times, by counting and saying with each hop or clap, “1, 2, 2”
• Can you find a number that is less than 5?
• Can you find a number that is one more than 8?
• Can you find a number that is one less than 6?
• Can you find a number that is one more than 9?
• Can you find a number that is one more than 5?
• Can you find a number that is one more than 7?
• Can you find a number that is one less than 4?

3. Now add more circles and include numbers 11 - 20.  Follow the same steps as before.

Activity 5:  What To Do After Reading

Skills:  Students will be able to recall information in a book (main characters, setting, ordering events, conflict in a story, using picture clues to answer questions 

Materials to Collect at Home:  Books to Read Aloud to your Child; The Wicomico County Public Library is a great resource to families, please consider getting a library card and visiting the library with your child.

Directions:

After reading the book to your child, ask them questions to check their understanding of the book.

• Does your child show you how a book is read by tracking the words (following the story with their finger while it is being read to them)?
• What is the title of this book?

• Who are the characters in this book?

Your child may list the characters and point to pictures of different characters in the story, they may be people, animals,etc…

• Where is the setting or where did the story happen?  What do you think the season is?  What time of day do you think the story takes place?

Your child may use picture clues to give examples from the book to answer these questions.

• Questions about the story detail:

Sequence of events in the story (first, then, next)

Have your child retell the story in their own words.

• Using picture clues to answer questions about the story:  When I go back and look at this picture in the book, what does the picture tell me?  We can use picture clues in books to give us more information or clues about what is going on in a story.

Activity 6:  Shape Hop 2D Shapes

Shapes Include:  Square ⬜, Rhombus , Circle ⚪, Triangle △, Rectangle ▭, Trapezoid , Pentagon ⬠ (5 Sided), Hexagon ⬡ (6 Sided) and Octagon 🛑 (8 Sided)

Skills:   Students will recognize different shapes.

Materials to Collect at Home:  Sidewalk Chalk

Directions:

1. Using sidewalk chalk, find a safe surface outside to draw 2 of each shape listed above.
2. You will call out a shape name, number of corners (vertices) or number of sides.  Your child will hop to the shape and then explain why they selected that particular shape as their answer.
3. Here are some sample questions that you may ask:

• Find a shape with 4 sides, Hop to that shape.  What shape did you choose?
• Find a different shape with 4 sides, hop to that shape.  What shape did you choose? 
• Hop to a shape that has 6 sides.  What is the name of that shape?
• Can you find a shape that has 0 sides and 0 vertices?
• What is your favorite shape?  Hop to it.  What is the name of your favorite shape?

4. To play this game inside, cut different shapes out of construction paper and have your child answer your question by hopping to the correct shape.

Activity 7: Asteroid Number Line (0 - 20)

Skills:  Students will identify the number that comes before and after a given number.

Materials to Collect at Home: Index cards, sticky notes or small pieces of paper; marker or crayon; scissors (if cutting paper); aluminum foil.

Directions:

Make number cards by writing each number, 0 - 20, on an index card.  Take a piece of aluminum foil and shape it into a flat disc (this is your asteroid).  Place the number cards in order in front of your child.

• Have your child gently throw their asteroid (aluminum foil) over the number cards. 
• Ask your child:   What number did your asteroid land over?  Then you can ask what number comes before that number?  What number comes after that number? 
• Asking your child, “How do you know?”  is a great way to make sure they thoroughly understand a concept.

Activity 8: What’s My Number

Skills:  Students will identify a number using more and less.

Materials to Collect at Home: deck of cards or the numbers 0 - 20 written on post it notes, index cards, or small pieces of paper; pen or crayon

Directions:

1. If using a deck of cards, remove the face cards- only use the Ace with the number 1 on it. 
2. Whether you are using a deck of cards or a number card that you have made, place all the cards face down on a table in front of your child. 
3. Without looking at the card, have your child hold a card up in front of their forehead, so that you can see the number. 
4. Then, give them a clue using the words “more” and “less” to help them figure out the number they are holding.  Your clues may include things such as: “Your number is one less than 9”; “Your number is 2 more than 13”.    

Activity 9: I’m Going On Vacation

Skills: Students will identify beginning sounds in words.

Materials to Collect at Home:  None needed for this activity

Directions:

While in the car on a trip or driving around town, there are 2 different things you can do to help pass the time.  First, starting with the letter A and working your way through the alphabet, ask your child to name things they are taking on their trip that start with each letter of the alphabet, (ex: I’m taking an apple, I’m taking a book, continuing through the rest of the alphabet).  Another thing you can do in the car is use environmental print.  I’m going on a road trip and I am stopping at… Students will name in alphabetical order different places they may stop or signs they may see.  Ex:  I am going on a road trip and I’m stopping at “Arby’s”, “Baskin Robbins”, continuing through the alphabet.

Activity 10:  Book Rhyming Adventures

Skills:  Students will be able to match a picture that rhymes with a given word.

Materials to Collect at Home: any book from home or library; empty roll of toilet paper for a telescope, markers, crayons or other craft supplies to decorate telescope

Directions:

Have your child make a telescope using any art materials you have at home.  They will use it to look for pictures.  Using a book that you have at home or borrowed from the library, starting at the beginning of the book, say a word to your child.  Tell them to look at the pictures on a certain page using the telescope they made.  Ask them to tell you the word for a picture that rhymes with the word that you said to them.  Rhyming words are words that have the same ending sound (ex:  car and star).  Continue this activity through other pages in the book. You can repeat this activity with other books.

Activity 11: Bottle Cap Addition (Students should know addition problems through 20)

Skills: Students will recognize numbers 0 - 20 and add numbers to 20.

Materials to Collect at Home: 22 bottle lids, bowl; large bowl; permanent marker; water

Directions:

1. Put water in a bowl.
2. Using a permanent marker, label the bottle lids with the numbers 0 - 10, 2 times so that you have 2 sets of the numbers 0 - 10.
3. Put the bottle lids in the bowl of water.
4. Tell your child to close their eyes and select 2 bottle lids.
5. Your child will then add the 2 numbers and share the sum.
6. The number lids go back in the bowl. Your child will repeat the process.

Direcciones:

Pida a su hijo que haga un telescopio con cualquier material de arte que tenga en casa. Lo usará para buscar imágenes. Usando un libro que tenga en casa o prestado de la biblioteca, comenzando desde el principio del libro, dígale una palabra a su hijo.
