Inclement Weather

Inclement Weather Plan WCPS

  • Revised Inclement Weather Plans for Remainder of 2020-2021 School Year

Starting on Jan. 4, 2021 and for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year, Wicomico County Public Schools will transition to fully virtual instruction on inclement weather days that would in the past have been delayed openings or snow days. That will be the case whether students are learning in virtual, small group or hybrid instructional models.

This plan will allow the school system to make a decision sooner when inclement weather is expected, providing families with early notice so they may make necessary adjustments and setting up a consistent framework for school status decisions. By having virtual instruction days when needed due to weather, Wicomico County Public Schools will be able to continue with the approved calendar, without adding makeup days at the end of the year or adjusting holidays or professional days within the calendar.

On inclement weather days when virtual instruction is implemented, students will follow the same schedule they would have followed that day, whether they were scheduled to be in person or virtual. Students will be expected to log in on time to each of their classes and attendance will be recorded. Only in the case of a weather event severe enough to cause widespread power and internet outages would classes be canceled for the day, resulting in a “no school day” and the need for a makeup day.

As always, any change in status for Wicomico County Public Schools will be communicated in a variety of ways: SchoolMessenger call/email to school families and staff; Wicomico County Public Schools’ website and social media; school social media; and local media.

    Wicomico County Public Schools

Inclement Weather Statuses for Remainder of 2020-2021 School Year

    Virtual Instruction, Buildings Open

This status will be implemented for minor weather events (such as fog, light snow or ice) affecting morning transportation for students but not deemed significant enough to close the building for staff. This type of weather event would previously have caused a delayed opening. Families and staff of Wicomico County Public Schools will now know in advance that this status means that all instruction will be virtual for the day.

Instruction: Virtual for all students, begins on time

    Meal Service: As usual

Buildings: Open for staff, though staff may work remotely

    Virtual Instruction, Buildings Closed

This status will be implemented for weather or road conditions that would have closed schools in years past, previously resulting in the need to make up a missed day of instruction. Now, all instruction will be virtual for students and instructional staff, resulting in an academic day with no change to the approved calendar. School buildings will be closed and meal service will be canceled.

Instruction: Virtual for all students and instructional staff, begins on time

    Meal Service: Canceled

Buildings: Closed for all staff except essential personnel; employees work remotely

    After-School and Evening Activities: Canceled

    No School Day

This status will be implemented when even virtual instruction is not feasible, such as during at times of extreme weather conditions or widespread power or internet outages. These days would potentially need to be made up by the end of the school year. Buildings will be closed and meal service will be canceled.

    Instruction: Canceled

    Meal Service: Canceled

Buildings: Closed for all staff except essential personnel

    After-School and Evening Activities: Canceled

    Early Dismissal

This status will be implemented when an unexpected weather event occurs while students are in school buildings for hybrid or small group learning. Instruction will end early for all students, including those learning virtually. Staff will be dismissed after students. Depending on the weather or road conditions, an early dismissal could be for anywhere from 1 to 3 hours.

Instruction: Both virtual and in-person learning end early

    Meal Service: May end early

Buildings: Closing early for all staff

    After-School and Evening Activities: Canceled
