    Opposite Day

snowflake We have a couple more weeks of instruction before our Winter Holidays break. While we look forward to our break, we remind our students and their families that instruction will continue and we will work to ensure that our students comply with our high expectations for behavior and attendance.

We will have an early dismissal on Wednesday, December 8. On Wednesday, look for children to be dismissed three hours early as we will begin our dismissal procedures at 12:45 p.m. If you usually see your child get off the bus at 4:15 p.m., count on seeing him or her at 1:15 p.m. If you usually pick up your child at 3:50 p.m., please come to school at 12:50 p.m. Students will be dismissed with a “grab - n - go” lunch to take home. We recognize that some students may not have an opportunity to eat lunch until much later, so you may send a snack with your child on Wednesday morning as he or she comes to school. In the late-morning, teachers will provide students with a mask/snack break to assuage their hunger until they can get home and eat their lunches.

As we approach the holiday, we will not open our school to visitors or ask parents to send in snacks for a holiday celebration. As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, we plan on managing a movie event to recognize the hard work that our students have completed this school year, so far. So, please refrain from sending in snacks or treats; we will provide popcorn to students while they watch the movie; ensure that you send their water bottles on the day that the movie is scheduled for your child’s grade level.

In addition, we will encourage students to demonstrate their school spirit during the week of December 13 - 17, as they participate in a competition over the week to win the King/Queen Spirit Award. Look for additional details to come through your child’s Class Dojo, email messages and next week’s school message from me.

Students' last day of instruction before the winter holidays break is Friday, December 17, 2021. Schools will be closed through the holiday period, but administrators will be working remotely on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, December 20, 21 & 22. Calls will be forwarded to the appropriate administrator. Or, you may connect with our central office partners at 410.677.4400, if you need additional support.

Students will return to instruction after the Winter Holidays break on Monday, January 3, 2022, at the usual time. Students who are registered for the Books for Breakfast program will be welcome on that Monday as we return to school.

We celebrate with our Teacher of the Year representatives from Fruitland Intermediate School: Mrs. Jung, Mrs. White (grade 4) and Mrs. Harrington, who is our semifinalist and will represent our school as the competition continues in the spring.  Thank you for your continued support and for your attention to these important messages.

  • Canned Food Drive

Fruitland Intermediate School, under the leadership of the SGA, will be participating in an annual Harvest for the Hungry “Kids Helping Kids Food Drive” campaign.  This program provides an opportunity for children to collect food for the less fortunate and volunteer their time.    We will begin collecting food on Thursday, Nov. 11, 2021, and will continue until December 9, 2021. One-third of those served by emergency food programs in Maryland are children under 18.  Through Kids Helping Kids, students learn about one of the most solvable social issues of our time – hunger and take-action, which allows them to feel that they are making a real difference.  Kids Helping Kids is a wonderful way to build school spirit.

MEAT & PROTEIN- Canned meat (chicken, tuna, etc.), peanut butter, nuts & seeds, dried beans

FRUITS, JUICES & VEGETABLES- Canned fruits & juices, vegetables, soups & stews (low sodium), juice boxes

BREAD & CEREALS- Oatmeal, breakfast cereal, rice, rice cakes, pasta, granola, cereal bars
