Collaborative Project

A collaborative project is intended to allow interested individuals (students and teachers) at different institutions to collaborate on research projects / activities in a meaningful way.

 

·        I Have a Dream

·        Grandmother and Me

§         Students will tell the word for "grandmother" in their language, what they call their grandmother, ways they spend time (or did spend time) with their grandmother and why she is very special.

 

·        Bucket Buddies

§         Students from around the United States and other countries will collect samples of their local ponds.  They will compare and contrast what organisms they find in the water samples.

 

·        Electronic Postcards

The Marco Polo: Internet Content for the Classroom Web sites through the Marco Polo Foundation offer activities for the classroom. There are 5 Web sites covering mathematics, science, geography, economics, language arts, visual arts, and humanities.

 

·        Marco Polo:  Safety Tips from Officer Buckle and Gloria

§         Recognizing problems and identifying solutions are skills that help students develop awareness of themselves and their surroundings. After reading the book Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann, students explore potential safety problems and then devise possible solutions. Each student creates a safety tip poster similar to the ones in the book to present a solution to one of the identified safety problems. Students communicate their safety messages to others by displaying the posters around the school or in the community. This lesson could easily be adapted for use with older students.

After students have an opportunity to explore similarities and differences among the retellings and revisions, they are introduced to fiction and nonfiction texts featuring wolves in order to provide them with a different perspective of the “villain” in the Little Red Riding Hood tales. The unit culminates in a class-written version of the folktale
