Course Description:

In RELA (Reading English Language Arts) each student will explore an integrated program of literature, writing, grammar, and oral communication.  The students will read and respond to a variety of texts.  They will study nonfiction and fiction in the textbook Literature and Language, Adventures in Literature, and in various novels.  Students will become familiar with basic literary terms and skills.  This course focuses on the writing process, therefore students will write narrative, explanatory, descriptive, and persuasive compositions.  Students will be required to write both long and short compositions in and out of class, practicing various prewriting and revision techniques.  Students will also review the parts of speech; examine the structure of simple, compound, and complex sentences; and practice correct usage in writing and speaking.

Homework:

Homework is assigned 2-3 times a week and should be completed and turned in on time.  If a student misses an assignment because of an absence, it is his/her responsibility to acquire their make up class work and homework.  Make up work should be completed and turned in the time allotted for in the student handbook.

Grading:

Final grades for each marking period are based on test/quizzes, homework, class work, positive class participation, and writing products.

Supplies:

Students are required to have the following in class each day: Sharpened pencil, blue or black ink pen, loose-leaf notebook paper, two-inch three-ring binder with dividers, and the appropriate textbook.

 Behavior:

The following rules are posted in the room, and each student is expected to follow them:

  • Be in your seat and ready to begin when the bell rings.

  • Remain in your seat unless you have permission to leave it.

  • Raise your hand to speak and listen attentively to others.

  • Respect the rights and property of others.

  • Enter and exit the room quietly.

Food and gum interfere with speaking and result in a messy environment; therefore they are not permitted in the classroom.  Should a student display a pattern of unacceptable behavior, the parent will be notified.  I believe in open lines of communication to meet the needs of my students and will contact parents on various occasions to keep parents informed of his/her child's progress.
