Statement of
Understanding:
All it takes is
just one spark of imagination and creativity to evolve to make art,
inventions, and technology possible.
Introduction: Just hearing or
seeing the name Disney brings about a sense of wonder, beauty, adventure,
magic and/or imagination for children as well as for most adults. Walt
Disney is a universal name that has touched the hearts, minds, and
emotions of millions of people. This treasure hunt is designed to show
who Walt Disney was, how he first got started, and how he eventually
created a worldwide entertainment company. Experience a little of the
magic as you answer the questions by using the links within each question,
and then answer the Big Question.
Questions:
- As you complete the
treasure hunt, think about how art, inventions, and technology all begin
with a little imagination and creativity. Generate one or two questions
of your own about the understanding statement, and then
answer them on a Word Document as you work through the questions in the treasure hunt.
(The Word Document you create will be for all of the questions in the
Treasure Hunt.)
- Read the
overview about Walt Disney Company and list the four major
business segments. Next, give at least two examples of the
businesses within each segment. What is the significance of all of
these Disney businesses?
- Even if you have never been to
one of Disney’s Theme Parks, you can get a first-hand experience by
checking out all the possibilities on The Official Home Page of
the Walt Disney Company and then taking a
virtual field trip. (Just look at all the choices.) Next, click on
“Destinations” and choose one. Then, click on the web site and choose
an attraction or entertainment-featured item to let your journey begin!
After your attraction or entertainment journey, write a paragraph
describing the creativity or imagination that was apparent in the making
the attraction. Include how you felt when you were on your journey.
- After reading the
biography of Walt Disney, describe his childhood. In your
descriptive paragraph, include information about his family as well as
his interests when he was young. How was Disney’s life alike or
different from yours?
- After you read about the
history of the Walt Disney Company, think about the hardships and
challenges Walt Disney faced as he tried to fulfill his dreams
throughout his lifetime. What do you think it was that kept him
motivated and determined to persevere each time he faced an obstacle?
Give examples of at least two of his hardships or obstacles. Be sure to
use information from the text to support your answer.
- Walt Disney was inducted in the
National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2000. Identify what his
invention was and explain the importance of it.
- Enter the Legends Plaza on the
Disney Legends page and read about a few of the different Disney
legends. Choose one and write a paragraph about what he/she was famous
for and be sure to include the individual’s talents, imagination, and
dreams that made it possible to create the Disney magic.
- Take a look at the black and
white image of
Mickey Mouse and read the quote from Walt Disney. Next, take a look
at the two illustrations at the bottom of
Walt’s Masterworks page and read the article, "Walt's Masterworks,
Mickey and Friends". Now, think about the statement of
understanding and explain what Walt Disney means by his quote.
- Through his work, Walt Disney
brought joy, happiness and a universal means of communication to the
people of every nation. Using Inspirations7, create a graphic organizer
(web) to show the
globalization of The Walt Disney Company.
The Big
Question - Putting It All Together:
Pretend
that you plan to work for The Walt Disney Company in your future. You may
choose any business segment. (You may want to check out
Jason Willbrandt’s experience at Disney.) Write a letter to your
parent/guardian or teacher explaining what you would like to do at The
Walt Disney Company when you grow up. Be sure to include the talent,
creativity, and imagination you have to help you with your intended
career.
