Synonyms

What are synonyms?

Synonyms are words or phrases that are different but have similar or the same meaning. An example of a pair of synonyms would be large and big. Another example would be small and little

• The fish's mouth is very big. The fish's mouth is very large.
  • Either word, big or large, can be used in the sentence. They both have the same meaning and both make sense in the sentence.
• The mouse if very small. The mouse is very little.
  • Again, using either word does not change the meaning of the sentence.

Here are a few examples of synonyms.

Synonyms	Examples
lady woman	The lady will try on the dress in the fitting room. The woman will try on the dress in the fitting room.
men gentlemen	There are 60 men waiting at the stadium gates. There are 60 gentlemen waiting at the stadium gates.
new unused	My mother bought me a new pair of jeans. My mother bought me an unused pair of jeans.
baby infant	The baby would not stop crying. The infant would not stop crying.
adults grown ups	The meeting is for adults only. The meeting is for grown ups only.
