A struggling student may be referred to the Special Education department when a learning disability is suspected. A disability might be suspected if several modifications and strategies have been tried in the classroom and the child is still not meeting with success. A team consisting of an administrator, the special education teacher, the regular education teacher, the parent, and any other individuals that may be needed would meet to determine whether appropriate assessments are needed. If a need is determined, assessments are requested. After completion of assessments, the team meets again to review the results and determine whether the student qualifies for special education services. The school has 90 days from the date of the referral until the meeting to determine eligibility. If the child is identified as having a disability, an Individualized Education Program is developed and implemented within 30 days. |
