Reading
We use the series Reading by Houghton Mifflin. There are six themes in our anthology (reading book) each with a different topic that ties the stories in that theme together. During each theme we will focus on building our reading comprehension by predicting, inferring, monitoring, clarifying, questioning, and evaluating what we are reading.
You can find out what books are in each theme and the skills associated with the themes by making a selection from the table below. You can also see the vocabulary lists for stories in each theme. Students will have a test of story vocabulary at the end of each story.
You can visit the publisher's page and get some information about the series. You can also check out our current theme. This site has some very good support for this reading series that you can use at home with your child. Take a few minutes and explore! Just click on the reading book! To return to this page, click on the back arrow.
We will also have many, many opportunities to read a variety of books independently and as a class. Students will have monthly independent book report assignments beginning in September. Each month the focus will be on a different genre of reading. You can learn more about the different genres of reading by clicking on the link below. This site gives detailed definitions and book lists for each genre.
Book Reports: Click on the month to see the assignment page and rubric for the book report.
