THE ROMAN EMPIRE

This page deals with topics to be covered in Biology this year. If students have trouble understanding what is being taught, this page may help. Remember, YOU are responsible for studying. Your parents and I CANNOT do it for you.

I. Molecules and Cells

Our Biology book begins with Biochemistry. A basic understanding of chemistry is important.

II. The Cell

In studying cells, this is the best site I have come across. We will be using this site in class. If you find a site that you think is better, please let me know.

UPDATED 11/8/02:

Biology students will have to construct a model of a cell. The directions are: You will be creating a cell model. This project will be worth 30 points. Using household items, nothing perishable, to create an animal or plant cell. Some examples of household items include, but not limited to, straws, uncooked pasta or rice, plastic wrap, aluminum foil, candies, marshmallows, dried fruit, string, yarn, hair gel, etc...

In your project, there has to be at least 10 organelles present. Some of the following suggestions to use: nucleus, mitochondria, lysosome, nuclear membrane, golgi apparatus (body), cell membrane, smooth and rough e.r., centrioles, nucleolus. If you plan to do a plant cell, the following must be included: cell wall, vacuole, chloroplast.

You must make a key to accompany your newly created cell. The key must identify the organelle and how it is represented.

A site that may help in the construction is available.

III. Dissections

Dissections  are a part of Biology. If you plan on being a pre-med major, the hands-on approach is the best.

Some students hate frog dissection. This is an alternative to the handling of the frog.

Chicken dissection is a part of AP Biology. Mr. Schuster will be conducting this dissection. Different systems will be studied such as the cardiovascular system, digestive system, urogenital and endocrine systems.

Mr. Perry does cat dissection. The AP Biology class will perform this dissection. Mr. Perry also does Human Physiology with a touch of anatomy.

IV. Advanced Placement Biology

If you plan on taking the AP Test, you need to constantly study. The University of Georgia also puts out a helpful link. Essay questions need to be studied. If you are having trouble with vocabulary, knowing the roots of words can help.

Labs are an important part of AP Biology. A couple of the essay questions will probably pertain to work done in the lab. As the year goes on, I will post different essay questions to help prepare you for the AP Essay part of the exam.

V. Bugs In Your House

There are many bugs that we are not aware of. How many of these bugs do you believe are on you or in your house? Don't call an exterminator!!!!

VII. TAXONOMY

The science of naming, grouping and classifying deals with taxonomy.  We will be studying the five kingdoms and the modern version of classification that deals with domains. Some classification systems do not include the Kingdom: Monera.  Instead they replace that kingdom with eubacteria and archebacteria.  Remember, in classification, differences occur which distinguish eukaryotic cells from prokaryotic cells.

To look at examples of organisms belonging to the various taxonomy groups and to learn about the characteristics of each group, Berkeley seems to have the most up to date information.

VIII. Parasitology

Parasites feed off of a host and cause harm to that host. Parasitism is one of the three forms of symbiosis. Symbiosis means "living together". The other two are mutualism and commensalisms. Parasites can be found throughout the world. You may even be harboring a parasite!!
