All Wi-Hi students should have received their 4th Marking Term Progress report by the end of the day today. The school phone number is (410) 677-5146 and messages left for teachers will be returned promptly, usually by that night.

Just a reminder, any class that a student fails for 4th Marking Period means the student has failed that class for the year and no credit is earned. If it's needed for graduation, it will have to be repeated. Encourage our Wi-Hi students to do their best for the last five weeks and to live up to Mr. Hughes' challenge of NO FAILURES IN ANY CLASSES for 2008-09!

PLASTIC BOTTLE USE AND RECYCLING STUDY BEGINS AT WI-HI IN MRS. AUSTIN'S CLASSES

Three of Janice Austin's Algebra classes at Wicomico High School will begin a survey of plastic bottle use and recycling today for Earth Day in a special study that will help the environment while giving the students exposure to a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) project and preparing them for next month's Algebra HSA.

Starting last Thursday at lunchtime, Wi-Hi students have been be asked to toss their empty plastic drinking bottles into a giant bag outside the cafeteria. The bag, more than 15 feet in length and extra wide, will be used to collect bottles until sometime next week, when it is full.

The Algebra students prepared for the survey by creating posters to advertise it to other students, and doing research on the internet about recycling of plastics. They will be measuring the volume of the plastic bottles collected and determining the impact on the landfill if all of those bottles were thrown away. The survey the conduct will help hone skills that will be assessed on the Algebra HSA, which requires students to understand surveys, predict the outcome, collect data, and represent that data. Other students at the school will participate by recycling and by filling out a short recycling survey. For engineering (STEM), the Algebra students will be proposing ways for people to reduce the volume of plastic bottles at home, perhaps by compression.
