Dear Parents/Guardians,

Wicomico High School is pleased to announce that it will continue the exam exemption policy this school year. The exemption policy, designed to improve attendance and therefore academic achievement, was very successful in significantly improving attendance last year. This letter is to inform you of the criteria your student needs to meet in order to be exempt from the mid-term and/or the final exam.

The exam exemption is linked to grades as well as attendance. The following are the criteria for exemption each semester:

A - 4

B - 3

C - 2

D - 1

Note: Tracking attendance for the purposes of this policy went into effect on October 16, 2006

A student who has an A for a semester average and no more than 4 days absent, excused and unexcused, would be eligible for exemption from that course’s exam. A B semester average and no more than 3 absences, a C semester average and no more than 2 absences, and a D semester average and no more than 1 absence would also be reason for an exemption from that semester exam. In addition to the semester average and number of days absent, the student would NOT be eligible if they have accumulated any suspension days.

Students who are deemed exempt from a particular exam will not be required to attend school during the time allotted for that exam. Parents will be notified of the exam schedule so that they will know when their children are not required to attend school.
