FOUR STATE CHAMPIONS FROM BAYSIDE!

Posted 3/13/07

The Bayside Conference had a pretty good Saturday at the State Tournament as FOUR champions hail from the Eastern Shore! Here's a look, with help from The Daily Times:

LESTER ANDREWS

MARDELA

Lester Andrews pinned Chris Norman of Randallstown in 2:21, defeated Jim Reilley of Smithsburg by decision and beat Aaron Patterson of Beall by major decision to reach the state finals, where he pinned top-ranked Danny Bichner of Glenelg in 2:50.

TREVOR RICKETT

STEPHEN DECATUR

After defeating Paul Jerry of Surratsville, Lance Coles of Randallstown and Clarksburg's Tanner Wrublik, Rickett faced his toughest competition in the championship match in top-ranked Tyler Strube, who was 41-0 this season before facing the Decatur senior. Rickett pulled off the upset with a 4-1 win.

DANNY MILLER

STEPHEN DECATUR

Miller first defeated Joe Camlin of Winters Mill with a pin in 5:26, Brian Nance of Atholton by decision and Jeremy Harbaugh of Smithsburg by decision before wrestling Queen Anne's senior Patrick Klenkel to a 3-2, four-overtime decision for Decatur's first-ever wrestling state championship, followed quickly by Rickett's win less than an hour later.

RICKY DORSEY

JAMES M. BENNETT

Dorsey defeated Tyler Smith of Bowie in a major decision, pinned Franklin's Vincent Crocker and outlasted La Plata's Jake Schilling 7-5 to reach the 3A/4A 112-pound championship, where he made short order of Huntingtown's Daniel Justice, pinning in 1:46. Dorsey is Bennett's first state champion wrestler since Vernon Knox's 1992 title.

RETURN OF THE VEGAS LINES

Posted 1/31/07

Back by popular demand (really, just read the Bayside Forum!), here's the latest edition of the Vegas Lines. Again, I never set a line on matches involving Wi-Hi (for obvious reasons), and in no way are these to be used for the purpose of an actual cash wager. A "+" means I expect the team to lose by that much, a "-" means I expect the team to win by that much.
ODDS TO WIN BAYSIDES:
DECATUR: 2-1 KI: 15-1 FIELD: 1,000 - 1
JMB: 5-1 K: 20-1
MAR: 10-1 NC: 25-1

Notes on updates for 2006-2007

Posted 11/16/06

Again, indulge me a personal aside.

Please don't e-mail this year asking why the site has been updated since last night's match, or since this kid beat that kid.

For the first time, both of my own children are partaking in a winter sport. In this case, it's swimming for the Mid-Delmarva YMCA, a well-run and well-coached team that, I might add, has been wonderful about accommodating my son's vision problems. But it's also a twice-weekly commitment to practice and the dual meet schedule couldn't have conflicted more with wrestling - Cert day, Parkside Tournament, my tournament and the state tournament.

So, between teaching two new classes, helping to coach Wi-Hi's team, and two kids with their own sports and Scouts adventures, this website falls a little farther down the priority list every year.

I'll do my best, but I'm going to rely on readers to help keep me current on teams' records and, more importantly, photos. If you have news, tips, corrections (I don't mind those, really), or photos, please send them to:

baysidewrestling AT verizon DOT net

Obviously, replace the words with the symbols. I'm trying to cut down on the amount of junk I get at my e-mail addresses, thus the use of the words instead of symbols.

Thanks again for your readership. I'm investigating moving this site to a private server, and that may introduce advertising. Anyone with web experience who has suggestions on which server company to use, I'm all ears.

Just a reminder to all coaches - try and call in your scores at (410) 749-7171. Use x212 once the automated system answers. Call in those scores - especially to WBOC, WMDT, The Daily Times, The (Easton) Star-Democrat, The (Cambridge) Daily Banner, the Worcester County Messenger and whatever papers exist in Kent, Queen Anne's and Caroline counties.
