Our present school building was an all Black high school from 1954 until
1974. Many graduates of Salisbury High school have gone on to make
significant contributions to the Salisbury community and the state of
Maryland.
Time
line:
- The
first high school in Wicomico County was opened in 1872.
- The first Black
high school was opened in 1915 and was called the Colored Industrial High
School. It was located in the Feldman warehouse on Commerce St. in downtown
Salisbury. There were 9 students in the first graduation class.
-
The Black high
school moved in 1930 from downtown Salisbury to a building on Lake Street.
The name of the black high school changed from the Colored industrial High
School to Salisbury High School at that time. The building that they were
in is now Chipman Elementary.
-
In 1954 a new
black high school was opened on Morris Street. It was still called
Salisbury High School. (Our school!)
-
In 1974, because
of desegregation (blacks and whites would now attend school together),
Salisbury High School was turned into the Wicomico County
Vocational/Technical Center. All the students who formerly went to
Salisbury High were then spread among all the other Wicomico County high
schools.
-
In 1999 the
Wicomico Vo-Tech center was renovated and added on to and became Salisbury
Middle school.
