Symphonic Band:
Tests and Quizzes
The Playing Exams grade category
(30% of Marking Period Grade) is compiled as the student completes at least 2
playing evaluations during a marking period.
The director reserves the right to determine the manner in which an exam
is completed. The formats include:
· Perform a portion or entire selection on tape, using music, completed during regular class time—recorders provided (graded by rubric for each portion or selection) [REGULAR SPOT CHECK]
· Perform a portion or entire selection on tape, using music, competed at home [AUDITION PROCEDURE]
· Perform a portion of a selection individually setting in seat; may be announced or unannounced (graded by rubric for each portion) [SCALE OR EXERCISE POP QUIZ]
· Select and perform duets with another student affront band (scored by rubric) [PERIODIC DUET PROCEDURE]
· Perform a selection individually as a soloist affront band peers (100 points by rubric for each event) [MIDTERM AND FINAL PERFORMANCES]
·
Complete written forms, quizzes, graded exercises (points may vary
according to content)
Students will be given specified days and materials for evaluation;
he/she will be expected to complete the assignment when asked.
If time runs out for a student to complete the evaluation within the
allotted class time, he/she will complete it the next class day with no penalty. If a student neglects to complete the evaluation with plenty
of time available, he/she will complete it the next class period with a 5-point
reduction per day it is late. For
routine evaluations, 1-2 days advance notice will be given before testing; no
notice will be given for “Pop” Quizzes.
All exercises will be allotted the points specified above and scored
according to an appropriate teacher/student-generated rubric/set of standards. Grades may include a summation, average, or combination of
student predictors (student grades personal expectation), student evaluations
(student grades personal performance), and teacher evaluations of the
quiz/performance.
FOR EXAMPLE
(Student:
Before Test Rubric Eval [25]+ After Test Rubric Eval [25])/2 + Teacher Eval [25]
= 50 Pts Possible for Evaluation
NOTE: The average of the student scores (before or after performance) will be adjusted to be no more than 2 points above or below the teacher’s evaluation. Outlandish scoring will be ignored (though followed up by discussion).
Marking Period Grades in this category will be attained by comparing the total points a student has earned with the total possible.
