Symphonic Band:

Daily Class Merit

The Daily Class Merit grade category (30% of Marking Period Grade) is compiled by the accumulation of points earned through a student’s preparation, performance, deportment, and participation in the regular class period.

Expectations for regular class periods include:

ü      Enter the classroom before the bell to begin class

ü      Be prepared for class each day—instruments and music

ü      Be seated and prepared to conduct class within 4 minutes of the bell; during this time, a student is to complete the following:

o       Retrieve and assemble instrument outside of storage rooms

o       Retrieve stand and music folder

o       Gather and order materials listed in the day’s agenda (written on blackboard)

o       Set in seat, open warm-up materials and await downbeat

ü      Non-musical discussions end once director begins class

ü      Focus on your musical development and that of your band and section

ü      Watch your words and actions:  build up your fellow bandsmen, do not belittle or insult anyone

Infraction of the expectations will be accompanied by the loss of partial or full day’s credit.

Lateness is defined as a student entering the classroom after the bell to start class.  Lateness to class must be justified by a signed and dated note from the teacher or administrator that withheld a student from attending on time to band class.  A student late without a note will loose half the day credit and accrue an unexcused absence; school procedure on lateness to class will be followed.

Absences from class for meetings or other responsibilities are sometimes unavoidable.  If an absence is planned, students are to present a teacher’s note to the director at least 2 days in advance.  Spur-of-the-moment “Oh, by the way. . .” absences accompanied by a teacher’s note will be granted at the discretion of the director, accompanied by a loss of that day’s class points.

No students will be allowed from class without a teacher’s note or published schedule.  Students will not be permitted to take class time to retrieve a note from a teacher.

Marking Period Grades in this category will be attained by comparing the total points a student has earned with the total possible.
