Mardela Middle & High : Administration
Mr. Rick Briggs
Mr. Frederick "Rick" Briggs is Principal at Mardela Middle & High School after serving in the same position at Bennett Middle School for two years. Prior to that, he was an Algebra teacher, Dean of Students, and Assistant Principal at Wicomico High School. He has a Bachelors of Science degree from Salisbury State University with a concentration in Mathematics Education and a Master of Education degree from Salisbury University with a concentration in Administration. He lives in Salisbury with his wife Kristen, daughter Ella, and son Owen.
Ms. Shawn Gardner
Ms. Gardner is in her third year as an assistant principal at Mardlea Middle and High School. She has also served as an assistant principal at Wicomico High School and as their Dean of Students. Ms. Gardner also held the Dean of Students position in another city high school for three years. A former foreign language teacher, Ms. Gardner has taught in both Dorchester and Wicomico counties and also worked for the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulations as a job search and career development trainer/coordinator. She received a Bachelor of Science from Clarion University of Pennsylvania, a Master of Education degree from Salisbury University, and a Master of International Management from the American (Thunderbird) Graduate School of International Management in Arizona.
Mr. Frank Grate
Frank Grate, our new vice-principal at Mardela Middle/High School, comes to us after being vice-principal at Bennett High School. Prior to that position, he served as a Pupil Personnel Worker and Court Liaison for the Wicomico County Board of Education, after being a Dean of Students at the Wicomico Alternative Learning Center. Mr. Grate earned his B.A. degree in English at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore, and his M.A. degree in English Education at Salisbury University. He is also certified as an administrator 1.
Ms. Sharon Cooper
Dean of Students
Mrs. Cooper moved from the western shore of Maryland to Wicomico County when she was 4 years old and has been here ever since! She was valedictorian of her high school graduating class at Mardela Middle and High School (was Mardela High School at the time). Staying close to home, she graduated from Salisbury State College (Salisbury University now) with a Bachelors of Science degree in secondary education in mathematics and psychology, and has taken administration courses at Wilmington College. Having done her student teaching at Parkside High School, she was hired to teach math there and taught there for several years before coming to Mardela. She then taught algebra for MANY years at MMHS before becoming the Dean of Students there. She is married,lives in Delmar, and is an extremely proud and happy mom and grammy.
