Service-Learning Requirements

Student Service-Learning is a requirement for a Maryland diploma.  Students must complete an equivalent of 75 hours of Service-Learning between grades 6-12 to meet this requirement.  In Wicomico County, students can satisfy this requirement by completing infused service projects in the following classes from grades 6-9:

· Family & Consumer Science

· Math

· Science

· Reading/English/Language Arts

· Social Studies

If for some reason, students do not earn the infused hours for one or more class, they must submit documentation for the necessary hours from Service-Learning projects completed in the community.

Students may use the same form to earn meritorious hours by going above-and-beyond the 75 hour requirement.  Documentation forms are available in the school’s Guidance Office or here.

Completed forms need to be returned to the student’s Guidance Office.  It is recommended that students check with their guidance office before beginning community-based projects to ensure that their planned hours will meet the requirements of Student Service-Learning.  Several local agencies with Service-Learning opportunities are listed on the Local Service Organization (see link bar at left).  Questions may also be directed to the coordinator of Service-Learning:
