Lessons
Learned:
We have learned a few lessons which provide direction for
the third year of this grant:
- Students
as young as 2nd grade understand how to use handheld computers and can
complete assignments with assistance.
- Students
as young as grade 4 can independently use handheld computers, mastering the
scroll, beam, keyboard, and taping features.
- Students
using handheld computers are motivated to complete learning tasks
- Students
as young as grade 8 can be responsible for personal handheld computers 24/7
and find those tools to be valuable organizational tools
- Handheld
computers support teacher productivity by enabling educators to access
student data, take notes, and maintain personal calendars
- Handhelds
support data collection and analysis to guide instruction.

- Teachers
will more often utilize data collection on the handheld if the software is
compatible with desktop grade book programs
- Educators
are supportive of accessing student information on handhelds. Accessing this
information online via the handheld would simplify the process of moving
information to the handheld.
- A
single class set of handhelds can be effectively shared throughout a school
when there is a technology coach or a technology resource teacher with
additional time to support the use of handhelds throughout the school.
- The
technology coaches and resources teachers most successful in getting other
teachers to use handheld computers are those who actively seek out classroom
teachers and demonstrate those handheld applications that can support their
current curriculum objectives. This
requires additional time during the resource teachers’/coaches’ day to
serve in this role.
- Professional
development should differentiate between new and experienced handheld
educators to help them move through phases of integration from entry and
adoption to adaptation and appropriation.
- If
funding for GoKnow continues, additional professional development should be
provided in the use of this program. Only
a few teachers seem to be using this resource.
- Provide
a variety of uses for the handheld computer in professional development
sessions and give teachers flexibility in selecting the most appropriate
application to support data driven decision making.
- A
Palm training class that focuses on data collection and analysis helps
teachers focus more on collecting and analyzing data in their daily
practice.
