1.E.3.I- Use a graphic organizer or note-taking technique

1.E.2.d- Make connections to the text from prior knowledge and experiences

Educational Technology Learning Goal and Indicator

V. Integrating Technology into the Curriculum and Instruction- Select and use appropriate technology to support content-

specific student learning outcomes.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment Design: Includes description of assessment and scoring tool/rubric assessing both the content and technology.

I will use the Palms to create a graphic organizer on the main character in the story Elliot’s House. Students will make at least five circles with arrows off of the characters name. They will write five characteristics that he displays in the story. I will assess how well they can use technology by seeing if they are able to make the five circles and by seeing if the can move the arrows in the proper direction.

Implementation: Includes description of how the assessment expectations will be communicated to students.

I will explain to students what we are going to do in class that day. Next, I will have the students make their character trait web on paper. After they have made their web on paper, I will have the students make their web using the PiCo Map application on the Palm. I will explain to students that in order for them to make the web they just make circles on their screen and then click inside the box and write in it.

Product: Explains what students will produce and how it is connected to what they are learning and includes a sample prototype of a finished product: Includes an explanation of whether you intend to use the student product(s) for other instructional purposes (i.e., sharing, gallery walk, data collection, ongoing instruction).

The students will complete their character trait webs on their Palms. Next, students will place their Palms on the back counter in

the room and students will complete a gallery walk around the counter. By taking a gallery walk, students will be able to see

what other students thought about the character in the story. Once all students’ webs have been viewed, I will have them sync

their Palms to PAAM so that I can read them and make comments. By collecting this data, I will be able to see which students

have a good understanding of the main character in the story.

INSTRUCTION WITH TECHNOLOGY INTEGRATION

Resources and Materials for Content: Text, books, etc.

Houghton Mifflin Invitations to Literacy- Theme: Could It Really Happen

Resources and Materials for Technology Integration: Software, Palm, etc.

PiCo Map, Palm, Palm Keyboards

Student Technology Skills

Prerequisite skills, if needed:

The students will have to already know how to attach the Palm to the keyboard and how to sync to PAAM.

Skills taught in this technology integration activity:

The skills taught in this activity are how to make a character trait web and how to sync to PAAM.

Objectives:

After making a character trait web, students will be able to: attach the Palm to the Palm Keyboard, make a character trait web with five traits using PiCo Map, and sync to PAAM.

Procedure:

1. Pass out Palms and Palm Keyboards.

2. Next, tell students to open the keyboards and set them up by pulling on each side until they hear a click and then push in.

3. Tell students to attach the Palms to the keyboards.

4. Tell students to turn the Palm on.

5. Next, click on the PiCo Map application.

6. Next, click on "NEW"

7. Next, using the keyboard, type your name and your mailbox number where it says "Title".

8. Next, type your name where it says "Your Name".

9. Next, make a circle in the center of the screen.

10. Then, click on the inside of the box.

11. Next, type it the name of the main character.

12. Next, make another circle.

13. Inside that circle, write a trait that the main character possess.

14. Then, using your stylus, go from the center of the characters name to one of their traits. When the box comes up, click on a white part of the screen and an arrow will be made. You have now linked the main character to one of their traits.

15. Next, repeat steps 12-14 to make the other four traits.

16. After all the traits have been linked to the main character, detach your Palm from the keyboard.

17. Next, take your Palm to one of the computer cradles in the room.

18. Place your Palm in the cradle.

19. Press the sync button.

20. Pull off the cradle when finished.

21. After all students have synced, collect the Palms and the keyboards.

DIFFERENTIATION

Extension Activities:

As an extension activity, I had the students write their name and the title of the work using Graffiti.

Remediation Activities:

Some students need remediation on how to properly use Graffiti and how to put the Palms on the keyboards.
