Graffiti2:

In the application screen, tap on the Graffiti2 icon. Scroll through the Graffiti2 tutorial.

Graffiti2 Tips:

To practice Graffiti2, tap on the Graffiti2 application. Once there, follow through the tutorial on the screen.

To display Graffiti Help, make a straight stroke from top to bottom across the handheld screen.

To delete characters, set the insertion point to the right of the character you want to delete and make the back space stroke (a line from right to left) in the Graffiti writing area. Write at a natural speed.

Do not write on a slant.

Write large characters.

Use the Giraffe game to practice your graffiti skills.

Learn how to backspace, move the cursor left and move the cursor right:

To backspace make a horizontal stroke from right to left in the Graffiti area. This is like the backspace key on your computer keyboard and will erase the character to the left of the cursor.

To move the cursor one character to the left without erasing, make a continuous left-right stroke: start at the right side of the Graffiti area, make a horizontal stroke left and then return back to the right without lifting the stylus. This will move the cursor to the left by one character without erasing.

Similarly, to move the cursor one character to the right without erasing, make a continuous right-left stroke.

Beaming:

Tap the Applications icon.

Tap the Menu Icon.

Tap Beam.

Tap the application you would like to beam.

Point the handheld at the other handheld.

Tap Beam.

When you receive a Beam, your handheld will ask you if you want to accept it. Tap yes.

Buttons:

Date Book

Creating an event:

Press the date book application button on the handheld.

Select the date you want for the event.

Tap the line for the time the event begins and enter a description

If the event is longer or shorter than an hour, tap the time of the event to set the duration and then tap OK.

Tap a blank area of the screen to deselect the event. A time bar appears next to the time, indicating the duration of the event.

Deleting an Event:

Select the event you want to delete.

Tap the Menu icon.

Tap Record, and then tap Delete Event.

If you’re deleting a repeating event, you will need to tap Current (for just the selected item), Future (for current and all future event items if the even is repeating), or All (for all occurrences of the repeating event)

Tips:

During a meeting, try attaching a note to the meeting appointment and record any responsibilities you may have as a result of the meeting. This will serve as a follow-up reminder. You can then schedule a follow-up meeting with your note attached.

To change a time or date, select the event, tap 'Details' button at the bottom and choose the Time or Date and change it. You don't have to erase (delete) an entry and rewrite (paste) it somewhere else.

In Date Book, if you press and hold your stylus on the date (at the top left of the screen), the time will appear. This is a great way to quickly see the time without having to exit the Date Book application.

Purge Your Date Book

If you find that your Date Book is running a little bit slower than it use to, it may be time for you to do a purge your older information. Purging simply removes appointments that are older than a specific date. You also have the option to save the completed items on your desktop, so that they are not erased for good, just from your handheld. To purge your Date Book, simply do the following:

1. In the Date Book application pull down the menu. Under "Record," select "Purge."

2. Select the point in time that you would like to remove appointments. Your choices range from 1 week to 1 month. Any appointments from that specific date will be removed from your handheld.

3. Perform a Hot Sync.

Event Finder: Using the Palm 'FIND' feature to your advantage? Assign a unique symbol (>, **, etc.) to all events in the Date Book anytime you need the ability to view those events in date order. After assigning symbol to the 'like kind' events, you can then use the Find feature to locate and view all those related events in date order. This is a valuable feature to 'store' Birthdays, Anniversaries and special events that occur over time. (Example: for Birthdays use the symbol followed by BIR and Last Name i.e. >BIR Smith ... and place on the date of the event. For Events use ** Event_Name, etc.

Scheduling Conflicts: Need to contact someone to reschedule an appointment? You can look up names stored in your Address Book directly from your Date book! For example, an appointment might read: 11:30 Lunch with Sasha Norkin

Simply select the name of the person you need to contact (i.e. Norkin). Remember, a quick tap of your stylus inserts the cursor in a word; a double tap selects the whole word.

Now go to Menu: Options: Phone Lookup (the shortcut is /L) The Phone Lookup function matches, as closely as possible, the name you selected with entries in your Address Book. Note: The address lookup searches either company name or last name only.

The Button Cycle: In the Date Book you can press the up and down buttons to cycle through the day in the day view, week in the week view and month in the month view.

Address Book

Press the Address Book application button.

Tap New to enter information for a new contact.

Tips:

I have found it helpful to place keywords related to my contacts in the note field. Then when I enter that word as a search, a list shows me everyone with that keyword. It is a great way of having each contact listed in multiple categories. For example, if you have a restaurant listed in your address book, you can add the word "Restaurant" as well as the type of food they serve, such as "Italian" in the note field. Then you can perform a search using "Restaurant" and "Italian" and any restaurants with those keywords will appear in your search results.

Navigation Button: Works similarly to a mouse. This button allows you to move through applications without using the stylus.

Also, when your handheld is off, pushing in the navigation button allows you to view the time.

Note Pad

This application is a virtual sticky pad. You write notes directly on the screen.

Back to the Applications Screen:

To Do List

A To Do List item is a reminder of some task that you have to complete.

To create a To Do List item, do the following:

Press the To Do List application button on the front of your handheld to display the To Do List.

Tap New.

Enter the text of the To Do List item. The text can be longer than one line.

Tap anywhere onscreen to deselect the To Do List item.

To change the category, priority, or due date of an item, tap on Details.

Setting priority:

The priority setting for items lets you arrange the tasks in your To Do List according to their importance or urgency. The default setting for the To Do List is to arrange items by priority and due date, with priority 1 items at the top. If you have a number of items in your list, changing an item’s priority setting may move its position in the list.

Note: When you create a new To Do List item, its priority is automatically set to level 1, the highest (most important) level. If you select another item first, however, the item you create appears beneath the selected item and is given the same priority as the selected item.

Tips:

One trick you can take advantage of when managing your To Do list is the use of common text combinations to organize items. For instance, you can use codes to indicate where a task will take place:

Office

Phone

Client

Computer

These codes can be used to identify nearly anything and can even be reduced to one or two letters to designate functions (like 'PC' for Computer, 'OF' for Office).

Another way to organize your to do items is to add each day of the week (e.g. Mon. - Fri.) as a category in your To Do List. Then, on your handheld, change your Date Book calendar to AGENDA VIEW. At the beginning of each day select the current day's category. Now, when you go to your Date Book, you have your To Do items for the day, and your appointments, all on one screen!

Memo Pad:

The memo pad provides a place to store information that is not associated with the Date Book, Address Book, or To Do List.

Creating a Memo:

Tap the Home Icon to get to the applications screen.

Tap the Memo Pad icon to display a list of Memos.

Tap New.

Enter the text for your memo.

Tap done.

Tips:

To put the most important memos at the top:

1. Pull down your "Options" menu

2. Select "Options"

3. Select "Preferences"

4. Select "Manual"

Now you can simply drag an entry into the new position of your choosing!

In order to neatly sort date sensitive memo files use a "yy/mm/dd memo title" format. This keeps the files in chronological order.

Palm Desktop: The Palm Desktop application can be used as the main method of data entry.

Click on the applications to see how they appear within this application.

How do the applications differ from those on the Palm?

General Tips:

If you hold the power button for 3 seconds, the backlight will turn on. Now your screen is more illuminated for low light situations.

In the built-in Datebook, To Do and Memo Pad applications, just start writing in the Graffiti area and a new entry will be created automatically. You don't have to tap the New button.

You can cycle through the categories in an application by pressing its application button repeatedly. For example, every time you press the Memo Pad button, the next category will be selected. This works for Address Book and To Do also.

Highlighting The Whole Sentence Line

There are two ways to highlight text:

1. You can tap twice to highlight a word.

2. You can tap three times (quick) to highlight the whole sentence.

Note: If you have text that wraps, it will only highlight one line.

Find Your Application Faster: If you have a lot of applications installed on your handheld, you may find that it takes a lot of scrolling to find the application you are looking for. To help speed up the process, when you are looking at the main menu screen (the screen that you see when you tap the "Home" silkscreen icon), simply write the first letter of the program in the graffiti area and it will automatically jump to the first application with that letter. More often than not, it's the application you were looking for!

Shortcuts: Shortcuts allow you to define a few characters that represent a longer string of text. When you enter the shortcut stroke followed by those characters, the full string is substituted.

You can define shortcuts in the ShortCut panel of the Prefs application.

1. Launch the Prefs application

2. Select the ShortCut panel

3. Tap the New button

4. Enter a name for the shortcut. This is what you will type after the shortcut symbol to call up the longer full text.

5. Enter the full text to be called when this shortcut is used

6. Tap the Okay button
