Why Sign-In?
Many of you probably
wonder about the importance of signing in at your mentee’s school in the WMP
Sign-In book. Aside from your signature
allowing the administration to know who is in their school, the Wicomico Board
of Education tracks your volunteer hours to acknowledge the in-kind
donation. An in-kind donation is a
donation of time and/or materials. And
your time is worth a lot! According to
Independent Sector, a volunteer hour is worth $17.19. This in-kind donation can be used to qualify for some
grants. It is important to be able to
capture the worth of the time you are spending with our students. Signing in also lets us know that you and
your student are meeting. This way we
can call those mentors who have not visited recently to find out what is going
on in their lives that they have not been able to fulfill their
commitment. Signing in/out just takes a
few minutes and is worth a lot to us!
Donations
Hats off to Ms. May May
Nu, who is giving us a monthly donation.
A big thanks goes to JC Parker who has donated his old digital camera to
the program. Thank you for your
generosity! We welcome your donation of
items or money. Because of your help,
we have been able to hold the Team Meets at the schools, and will have a newsletter
through December. If your business can
give us $150, we will put your logo on the outside panel of the newsletter for
that month. The newsletter is
distributed to more that 900 mentors, school personnel and community
members. We are asking civic groups for
donations, too. Even if you can give us

Maryland Association of
Boards of Education
We were invited to present
the Wicomico Mentoring Project at the annual MABE conference in September. Board of Education members from across the
state listened to a presentation that talked about how the program got
started. With the involvement of the
Greater Salisbury Committee, the Salisbury Area Chamber of Commerce, and the Wicomico
County Board of Education, the Wicomico
Mentoring Project was born in 1994. We
had 27 mentors from five businesses and were in three schools for the pilot
program.
Eleven years later we have
grown to 330 mentors from over 60 partners and are in 24 schools. We are on track to go over 600 mentors this
year! That will still leave over 400
students who do not have a mentor, so encourage your friends, neighbors,
relatives, anyone whom you think would be good with kids to join you and be a
mentor for one of our referred students.
We desperately need men and minorities for our middle and high school
guys. Tell everyone about your
experience and how mentoring is worth your time and energy.
Take a few minutes to view
the Mentor Training video that features several of our experienced mentors and
students who have graduated. Even if
you are experienced, it is nice to have your observations about mentoring
confirmed. Ask your school mentor
coordinator to find a place for you to view it. You will get some good tips and insights!
