All Schools are operating on a regular schedule

Frequently Asked Questions

What things should I consider when deciding if my child should attend the magnet program?
You should consider your child’s level of self-motivation, ability to work independently, and social-emotional development, including the ability to adjust to a new school setting.

What curriculum can I expect my child to follow in the magnet program?
Your child will follow the county and state guidelines (VSC). Math and Language Arts instruction will be one grade level above, with an emphasis on enrichment as an extension to the text. Teachers use a combination of novels, discussion groups, and technology resources to provide a comprehensive literacy program. The unit/theme approach is frequently implemented, and many languages related sources are used to integrate content areas.

How much homework can students expect to receive?
Magnet students follow the same guidelines as the county policy. Independent reading is an expectation for all students. Book reports and short/long term projects may be assigned as a means of having students apply skills, and to learn the importance of time management.

Do all magnet students qualify for T.A.D. (Thinking and Doing)?
Students qualify for T.A.D. based on a CSI of 125 and a minimum score of 90th percentile on both math and reading standardized tests.

How are the students transported to school?
Students may be transported by parent or by the county shuttle bus system. Students will ride the bus with the secondary students. Many of the students travel to a middle school and board a bus to the magnet site.

How does the schedule at the magnet school differ from the other elementary schools?
Magnet students receive instruction from 8:30 to 2:30. Since classes are departmentalized, groups travel to and from various subjects. Students participate in all regular specials (music, art, media, and physical education).

What extra-curricular activities are available?
Fourth and fifth graders may participate in chorus and/or strings. Fifth graders may also join the band.

What if my child does not perform as anticipated?
Specific steps are followed when a student is experiencing difficulty. If appropriate interventions prove to be unsuccessful, then the decision to withdraw the students from the Magnet program is an option of the parents, teachers, and/or administrators.
