How Is Achievement of Magnet Students Assessed?
Performance standards in the Wicomico County Magnet Program are high. As with all state schools, teachers assess student achievement in accordance with the Voluntary State Curriculum (VSC) standards/guidelines. Students progress is assessed continually using data from multiple sources including:
- Maryland State Assessment (MSA) in the areas of math, reading, and future disciplines
- Wicomico County Assessments
* Scholastic Reading Inventory (SRI) given four times annually
* Benchmark Tests administered periodically in both math and reading
*Yearly Progress Pro (YPP) informally, diagnostic tool used throughout the year to assess personal growth in math concepts and skills
- unit assessment given in all content areas
- student tasks and projects (both long term and short term)
- teacher observations (formal and informal)
- evidence of student commitment in daily, short term, and long term tasks
* student participation (independently and collaboratively)
* student production of high quality work
* student ability to think creatively, logically, and critically
Communication between home and school is essential for an effective program which meets the needs of the highly able learner. Conferences and mid-term progress reports are a part of ongoing communication. Parent conferences are held throughout the school year as a way of sharing student progress. Parents with concerns regarding students progress should contact the classroom teacher. Additional conferences regarding a student with ongoing difficulties are scheduled with school personnel to review support strategies and/or to determine if continued placement in the Magnet Program best meets the needs of the learner. Students who meet or exceed our county’s Magnet Program standards maintain their placement status from year to year.
