QUESTIONS & ANSWERS ABOUT THE EXTERNAL DIPLOMA PROGRAM

What is the External Diploma Program?

The External Diploma Program is a different way for you to earn a high school diploma that is uniquely suited to the needs and experiences of adults.  The External Diploma Program allows you to demonstrate your high school level skills by applying your skills in real-like situations.

How is the External Diploma Program different from other high school diploma programs?

The External Diploma Program differs from other high school diploma programs, such as the GED or Evening High School programs, in that it is not classroom or teaching based.  There are no specific courses that you are required to take, nor are there any required tests or final exams that you must take and pass in order for you to obtain your high school diploma.  Also, with the External Diploma Program, you have the flexibility of completing portions of the program at home.  At other times, you will meet one-on-one with an advisor or assessor during a series of office visits to complete the tasks you need in order to earn your high school diploma.  On average, you will meet with your advisor or assessor once per week for less than two (2) hours per week.

How will I demonstrate my skills?

The academic skills, including writing, speaking, computation, problem-solving, reading and critical thinking will be demonstrated by doing a real-life task, such as searching for a new apartment.  In that situation, your reading, writing and math skills will be demonstrated by reading a lease, writing a letter of complaint to a landlord, and budgeting the rent from a simulated monthly salary.  You must also demonstrate an entry-level job skill or home management experience, either by successfully holding a job, demonstrating performance, or getting job training.

Will it take a long time for me to complete this program?

The External Diploma Program takes an average of nine months to one year to complete.  Your own skill level and time restraints will determine how quickly you complete the program.  Parts of the program are done at home and other parts are completed in a series of private office visits.  All the skills eventually must be demonstrated with 100% competency, but relearning can take place at your individual pace.

What courses must be taken to earn the diploma?

There are no required courses.  Many adults who left formal school learned the required skills at work and at home.  If you do not have all the skills required by the program, you will be told which ones are missing and how they can be developed with the help of existing adult education programs, tutors, family, friends, libraries, and other community resources.

How do I enroll?

Each person enrolling in the program needs to attend an Information Session where the program will be described in more detail.  After registration and pre-enrollment evaluation, you will make several diagnostic appointments during which an advisor helps identify any basic skills that are weak, prescribes any brush-up needed, and makes referrals to resources where you can get assistance, if it is needed.

Are there any age requirements?

The current guidelines for the External Diploma Program specify that in order for an individual to enroll in the program, the individual must be 18 years of age or over.  Although, the External Diploma program is most appropriate for individuals who have had time to gain life experiences and develop some basic life skills.

What is the Individual Skill Assessment?

A DIPLOMA REQUIREMENT!  In order to receive your high school diploma through the External Diploma Program, you will have to demonstrate an individual skill.  If you have a job now, then your employer can verify your job skills.  If you don’t have a job, get one and stay with it.  Or, you may wish to enroll in a vocational program.  Not having a job or a special skill area can prevent you from receiving your diploma.

Does the program cost anything?

There is a $100.00 fee for the complete program.  There are no other charges for tuition or books, unless the candidate must replace an item due to loss.   As of 09 February 2007, costs for the program have been suspended!
