Casual Day to Support Wicomico Destination Imagination Global Finals Teams

All Wicomico School System Schools and Offices

Wicomico employees who donate to participate in a casual day on Friday, April 7 will be helping raise money for the six teams from Wicomico Schools that have qualified to compete at Destination Imagination Global Finals in May. Last Saturday six Wicomico teams qualified for Global Finals, and casual day donations will help the teams raise the money needed to make the trip to Knoxville, Tenn. Money raised through this casual day will be distributed to all the teams. Thanks for supporting the North Salisbury School Mustache Mustangs, the Bennett Middle School Legendary Llamas, the Salisbury Middle School Mindful Thinkers, the Salisbury Middle School Funky Monkeys, the Westside Intermediate School DI Brows, and the Wicomico High School Uncommon DInominators.

WCBOE Fun Run/Walk for Wellness & Literacy

Salisbury City Park near Ben’s Red Swings (Updated Location)

Come out Friday, April 7 and take part in a 5K Run / 1-Mile Fun Run/Walk “Race for Wellness & Literacy” in the Salisbury City Park. Wicomico County Public Schools and the Wicomico County Board of Education are putting on the event, in partnership with the City of Salisbury and Wicomico Public Libraries. Runners and walkers of all ages are invited to participate in this inaugural event, which will help kick off the first Salisbury Book Festival events throughout April and May. Participants are encouraged to bring a new children’s book to donate in memory of the late Salisbury University Professor Ernie Bond. Donated books and money raised will be distributed to Title 1 Wicomico schools. There will be a literacy and wellness fair from 4-6 p.m., and the race/walk will begin at 5 p.m. Everyone will begin at Ben’s Red Swings in the Salisbury City Park and end in the same location. 2nd annual Touch a Truck Event to Benefit Glen Avenue Elementary

American Legion Post 64, Salisbury

Mark your calendars for the 2nd annual Glen Avenue Elementary Touch a Truck Event at the American Legion Post 64 in Salisbury Saturday, April 8 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Children will be able to look at, touch, and learn about many different types of trucks that are used in our community. There will be tractor trailers, fire trucks, police vehicles, and more. Children will also be able to enjoy face painting and other activities. Hot dogs, hamburgers, chips and sodas will be available for purchase. This fun event will raise funds for Glen Avenue’s year-end PBIS incentive field trips. This event is open to the entire community for a small admission fee. Refreshments will be sold. Last year’s first Touch a Truck/Tractor event raised $800 for Glen Avenue students. The organization is currently seeking volunteers to bring large trucks, tractors, other farm equipment and emergency vehicles to American Legion Post 64 on Route 50 in Salisbury (across from the armory) for the event. 2nd annual Wicomico High Band Car Show & Quarter Auction

Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Department

This coming Saturday you have the opportunity to support the Wicomico High School Band at the 2nd annual Car Show & Quarter Auction at the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Department. It promises to be an enjoyable day filled with classic cars, good food, and many great items to bid on at the auction. The band will be playing, the barbeque pit will be fired up, and cars will be shined to perfection.

The car show is from 2-6 p.m.  It’s free to attend and vote, and $10 if you want to register your classic car, truck or motorcycle. The quarter auction starts at 5 p.m. (doors open at 4 p.m.), and tickets are $5 in advance, $10 at the door. We will have more than 75 items to bid on and plenty of food to enjoy.

The funds raised will go towards the purchase of new band uniforms, which typically run around $300 each.  This year the band has about 50 students, so as you can tell the band really needs your support to make new uniforms happen. If you would like to purchase an auction ticket, please see any band student or call 410-677-5146.  Even if you might not be able to attend, please consider purchasing a $5 ticket as a donation. Every bit helps!

Wicomico High School is also offering chances on a limited edition “Monster Energy” Fender Squier Bullet Guitar. The winner will be drawn Saturday. Tickets are $3 for one, $5 for two, or $10 for six. Please see Karen Scott in the Wicomico High media center,

GEAR UP: The Saturday Academy

Wor-Wic Community College

GEAR UP (Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs) is partnering with Wor-Wic Community College to offer The Saturday Academy, a series of free College & Career Workshops for GEAR UP students and free College informational workshops for GEAR UP parents. GEAR UP students are current 9th graders at Bennett, Parkside and Wicomico High Schools.

GEAR UP is a program made possible through a federal grant from the U.S. Department of Education. This program is designed to prepare students and families academically and financially to enroll and succeed in postsecondary (college or technical school) education. GEAR UP began working with the Class of 2020 in middle school and will continue to support students as they progress through high school on to graduation.

On March 11, GEAR UP students will be able to participate in “The Webs We Weave” while parents attend sessions on Academic Assessments and Wicomico County Summer Programs.

STEM Saturday

Salisbury Middle School

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics) Saturday classes have been offered throughout the 2016-2017 school year for students in grades 4/5 and 6/7/8. The last STEM Saturday will be held 10 a.m.-noon April 8, with students in grades 4-5 exploring “The Sun, Moon & Stars: Our Night Sky and Celestial Bodies” at Parkside High, and middle schoolers working on “Plant the Planet” at Parkside High. All STEM Saturdays take place from 10 a.m.-noon.

STEM Saturdays are free for Wicomico County students in grades 4 through 8. Anyone interested in attending a STEM Saturday event must pre-register, and early registration is recommended as the courses fill up early. The annual Kindergarten and Prekindergarten Registration Fair for Wicomico County Public Schools will take place April 10-13 at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center in Salisbury. Parents and guardians are encouraged to register children for the 2017-2018 school year as early as possible, so that families and schools can begin to plan and prepare.

The Registration Fair schedule is as follows, from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. each day:

To help ensure that all children have the required immunizations for school attendance, the Wicomico County Health Department will offer a free mass walk-in immunization clinic at the Health Department’s Fritz Building, 300 West Carroll St., during the Registration Fair, on both April 11 and April 13. Hours for the walk-in clinic will be April 11, from 8 a.m.-noon, and April 13, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. The walk-in clinic is only for students entering prekindergarten, kindergarten and public 1st grade. Parents must bring a current copy of their child’s vaccine record with them. Vaccines will be offered at no cost. Please call 410-543-6943 for more information.

The 2017-2018 registration forms will be available online and in school offices before the fair for families to fill out prior to the April 10-13 Registration Fair for Kindergarten and Prekindergarten. Registration documents will be posted at; please click on the Enrollment Quick Link. Families may bring the forms along with the required supporting documents to the Registration Fair at the Civic Center.

The Registration Fair will also serve families who need to register a student not in public kindergarten now who will be enrolling in the 1st grade for the 2017-2018 school year. (Students currently enrolled in prekindergarten-3, prekindergarten-4, or kindergarten in Wicomico County Public Schools do not need to register at the fair.)

To register or apply, parents/guardians will need to bring in the following documents:

  • a child’s birth certificate or registration of birth
  • driver’s license or picture ID of parent or legal guardian
  • child’s immunization record and current physical
  • child’s Social Security card
  • two forms of proof-of-residency documentation, in the name of the parent(s) or legal guardian(s).
    • For homeowners: Mortgage/property tax bill and one of the following: Current utility (gas, water or electric) bill with service address.
    • For those living at a rental property: Current signed lease plus one of the following: Current utility (gas, water or electric) bill with service address.
    • For those living with someone else whose name is on the home and utility bills: Bring that person and the two forms of proof of residency listed above, and driver’s license or picture ID for both of you.
  • child’s IEP/IFSP (if applicable)
  • court custody papers
  • income verification (for Prekindergarten only): 2016 Maryland tax return (if available) AND either four most current consecutive pay stubs, or State of Maryland Benefit Eligibility Letter (if applicable)

The Registration Fair is the first chance for families to register children for Kindergarten and apply for Prekindergarten for the 2017-2018 school year. Following the Registration Fair, registration for Kindergarten and application for Prekindergarten will take place at schools starting April 18. Please contact the school for additional information.

Children registering for Kindergarten must turn 5 by Sept. 1, 2017. Kindergarten is mandatory for all Maryland children who are 5 by this date unless the parents or guardians have completed a Kindergarten-Level of Maturity Waiver Form seeking later admission. Prekindergarten is not mandatory, and is offered to qualified children who will be 4 by Sept. 1, 2017. Prekindergarten is a half-day program throughout Wicomico County except for the Judy Center catchment areas of Beaver Run, Pemberton, and Charles H. Chipman Elementary (including the West Salisbury attendance area).  At Beaver Run and Pemberton, qualified children who are 3- and 4-year-olds attend the full school day.  Students in the 3-year old program must turn 3 on or before September 1, 2017.  Qualified 4-year olds in the Charles H. Chipman Elementary attendance area (including those in the West Salisbury attendance area) also attend for the full day.

Priority Prekindergarten admission will be given to Wicomico County children and Delmar, Del. children meeting any of these criteria:

  • come from low-income, at-risk, or homeless situations
  • have prior participation in Head Start 
  • experience challenges like emergency or health problems, limited English proficiency, or other home or family circumstances
  • recommended for the program by government or court referral

Parents and guardians whose children do not meet the criteria for priority admission may apply at the Registration Fair for children to enter Prekindergarten, and the child’s name would be placed on a waiting list for any remaining slots. Please note that if this application is made prior to the designated Registration Fair day for the child’s school, the application will be time-stamped for the end of the scheduled registration day for their school. Families will be notified in late summer if space is available. Documentation must be submitted prior to a child’s acceptance into the program.

The James M. Bennett High Drama Club presents “Crumpled Classics” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, Wednesday, April 12, and Thursday, April 13 in the James M. Bennett Auditorium. Tickets are $5 for general admission seating, and will be available at the door. With first-year teacher Ms. Collins out sick, a quirky cadre of students take it upon themselves to pull together the school’s annual “Classics on Parade,” acting out famous stories they’ve studied in their literature class. The students, however, decide to make the stories relevant to today’s audiences, with hilarious results! The authors are surely rolling over in their graves and Ms. Collins is terrified of losing her job, especially when the principal calls the superintendent in the middle of the show. You’ll love the hysterics of these plays-within-a-play. Romeo and Juliet set in a fast food place! Frankie Stein trying to assemble the perfect prom date! A second-rate theatrical agent becoming the Phantom of the Opera so he can force a good deal! A desperate Shirley Holmes and Joni Watson jump-starting a new detective agency! And teenage slacker Artie surprising his unimpressed mother with a sword he pulled from a stone!  It’s a comedy treat sprinkled with outrageous takes on some very familiar characters. For information please contact Chelsea Murray at

County Executive Bob Culver invites all Wicomico residents to participate in a public hearing on the Fiscal Year 2018 operating budget for Wicomico County. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. Thursday, April 13 in the Da Nang Room of the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. The public is encouraged to present comments and questions. The County Executive and his staff will consider this input when creating the Fiscal Year 2018 expense budget. Final decisions will be based on urgency of need and available funding sources.

Hanlin will hold a Superintendent’s Open Door Session from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday, April 19 in the Wicomico County Public Schools building, 2424 Northgate Drive (behind Lowe’s), Salisbury. Open Door Sessions throughout the 2016-2017 school year provide the opportunity for people to meet one-on-one with the superintendent to express concerns, offer comment, or ask questions on any issue involving Wicomico schools. Parent University: How We Teach about World Religions

40th annual Wicomico County Public Schools Elementary & Secondary Student Art Show

Wicomico Public Library, Downtown Salisbury

The 40th annual Wicomico County Public Schools Elementary & Secondary Student Art Show, featuring more than 1,500 works from students in every Wicomico school, will be on display at the Wicomico Public Library in Downtown Salisbury April 21-30. Art teachers have selected 20 to 50 pieces per school, including paintings, drawings, photographs and sculpture, to represent the creative efforts of Wicomico students. The artwork is installed throughout the library. Students whose artwork has been selected for the art show will receive an invitation to attend an opening reception after library hours on Friday, April 21, along with their family members. The exhibit will be available for viewing during library hours through April 21-30. Northwestern Elementary School 50-Year Anniversary Celebration

Northwestern Elementary School in Mardela Springs is celebrating its 50th year serving the students and families in the Mardela Springs and Sharptown communities.  As the school and community commemorate this special anniversary, please join us on Saturday, April 22 from 1-4 p.m. for a special event. Northwestern will welcome former, current and future families for an afternoon of food, music and games. There will be a rock wall, bounce house, and an inflatable obstacle course for the children. The Barren Creek Band will perform, we will have food available from Phat Boyz Catering, and students will be showcasing classroom projects from events from 1966 to now. At 2 p.m., there will be a program to recognize former and current staff members, administrators, and important guests. This event is free to the public. PARCC Testing Window

All Wicomico Schools with grades 3-12

The 2017 PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career) testing window will open on Monday, April 24 in schools serving grades 3-12. Schools will communicate with parents and students about the testing schedule for that student and school. Elementary and middle school testing will be completed without any delayed openings for non-test takers.

For high schools, most of the testing will be completed within the first six days of the testing window, barring any delayed openings due to weather conditions. On the first three days of testing, only test takers will report to school that morning, and the remaining students will report on a delayed schedule. In the event of a weather-related delayed opening for ALL Wicomico schools, there would be NO testing at all that day; the testing day would be rescheduled for the next school day, and the testing calendar would be adjusted to reflect the change by shifting the remaining testing days one day later.

2nd annual Wicomico High School “Success for the Best”

A student's success is formed upon the foundation of motivation, support, and opportunity.  At Wicomico High School, we have changed the climate to one in which every student should have a plan for success when they leave our doors after graduation. This is what inspired us to begin our Success for the Best community event last year, and we’re looking forward to our 2nd annual event which will take place on Calloway Street in Salisbury, one of the larger neighborhoods of students that attend WiHi, on Saturday, April 29.

The intent is to reach not only our students, but their parents and siblings in an attempt to promote a college and career readiness climate. Vendors will include local colleges and trade schools, local employers, and military recruiters in order to promote all possible pathways to success after high school. In addition, the event may also benefit parents who are looking for employment or opportunities to further their own education.  Wicomico High will provide food, entertainment, giveaways, etc. to make the event a fun and exciting way to take advantage of the many opportunities in front of our students.

The first Success for the Best event on April 16, 2016 served almost 500 guests - students, parents and other family members, school staff, vendors, and members of our school's community.  We were truly able to build a sense of unity and community among the attendees. We are confident that the number of attendees will increase this year.

The school thanks those have already donated to this year’s event. Any donor providing a donation (monetary, goods, services) with a value over $250 will be listed on the event T-shirt. These donations may also be tax deductible. Advanced Placement (AP) tests for students who have signed up by the March 17 Deadline to take the tests at the end of an AP course

Wicomico students who register by the March 17 deadline to take one or more AP (Advanced Placement) tests should remember to check the schedule for testing information for the AP testing window of May 1-12. The schedule is posted in Naviance, at, and listed below. Please note that in addition to the testing schedule provided below, Mardela High School students may take their AP tests at Mardela High; please check with Mrs. Shiles.

Test takers are reminded to arrive early for their tests so they can be in their seat on time and ready to go when the test begins. Students should also remember that phones are not permitted in the building during AP testing; anyone found with a phone will have the phone confiscated and their test results voided.

Wicomico County’s secondary summer school programs will be housed at James M. Bennett High School and will be held Monday through Friday from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. June 27-Aug. 4 (closed July 3-4). Secondary summer school programs included in the registration are Remedial Credit Summer School for middle and high school, and Honors original credit classes in Honors Chemistry, Honors Algebra II, and Honors Geometry. Registration for all of the secondary summer school programs will take place from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 22, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. June 23, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. June 26 at James M. Bennett High School. Remedial Summer School: Remedial summer school courses for middle and high school students. Students must bring in a copy of their latest report card to register. Students may take one or two courses as needed. The charge per course for Wicomico County students is $25/$50/$100 (Free/Reduced/Paid Meals). Out-of-county students pay $160 per course.

Original Credit/Honors Session: Original credit classes in Honors Chemistry, Honors Algebra II, and Honors Geometry. Students who enroll in an original credit summer course can make room in their schedule for special programs like JROTC, CTE and VPA, and expand the number of math, science and/or AP courses they can take. The charge per course for Wicomico County students is $50/$100/$200 (Free/Reduced/Paid Meals). Out-of-county students pay $325 per course.

Bingomania to Support Mardela Middle and High Bands

Wicomico Youth & Civic Center

Bingomania, the Eastern Shore’s largest bingo cash prize event, returns to the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center on Saturday, May 13. Doors open at 5 p.m. for early bird games and regular games begin at 7:30 p.m. Admission to Bingomania includes all regular and special games, including the Jumbo Jackpot Game. Regular game payouts are $500 while special games will pay out $1,000. The Jumbo Jackpot Game pays a maximum of $10,000 depending upon attendance. Increase your chances of winning and help a local food bank at the same time by bringing three non-perishable food items to the event. Those who do will receive three additional cards for the first early bird game. Tickets are $45 per person in advance and $55 per person at the door, fees may apply to ticket prices. Donate Gently Used and New Shoes to Support the Parkside High Class of 2020

Parkside High School’s freshman Class is conducting a shoe drive from March 15-June 1 to raise funds for their class. The Class of 2020 will earn funds based on the total weight of the shoes collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated footwear. Anyone can help by donating gently worn, used or new shoes at Parkside High School’s main office. Drop off shoes at the Parkside main offive Monday-Friday 8 a.m.-3 p.m., or call the school at 410-677-5143 and the Freshman Class will arrange for shoes to be picked up during upcoming collection days. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in developing nations.

Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the Parkside High School’s Freshman Class, people in our community can give those shoes a second chance and make a difference in people’s lives.

“We are excited about our shoe drive," said Michelle Wainwright, Freshman Class Advisor. "We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets that they don’t really wear anymore and the shoes are most likely still in great shape. The goal is to collect 300 bags of shoes by the end of the school year.”

“This is a huge win-win situation,” added Kelly Hartman, Freshman Class Advisor.  “By donating them to us, we are helping those less fortunate become self-sufficient and at the same time, they will also help the Class of 2020 raise much needed money.”  The funds raised will help to off-set the costs associated with the Class of 2020’s senior year.


Westside Schools’ PTA Discount Cards Available

Westside Primary School and Westside Intermediate School are currently selling discount cards for $10 each. Proceeds from the sale of the cards go directly to the schools to benefit students.  PTA funds for the two schools help lower costs of field trips for students, help pay for assemblies to broaden students’ life experiences and background knowledge, help cover subscriptions for magazines with current nonfiction text for students, and help fund field day as well as student incentives. The card often pays for itself the first time you use it in one of the restaurants. Please email at Westside Primary or at Westside Intermediate about getting a Westside card. (Staff members may arrange to have a card sent through the Pony Mail to them.) Local TV station 47 ABC (WMDT) supports teachers throughout the school year by giving Teacher Who Makes a Difference recognition, sponsored by Accurate Optical. WMDT receives nominations and surprises recipients in their classrooms. Submissions may come from students, parents, colleagues or anyone in the community. Nominate a deserving teacher today!


Family Portal Open for the 2016-2017 School Year

The Family Portal for parents/guardians and students in grades 3-12 will remain open until noon on the last day of school. Family Portal provides information to parents and guardians and students on grades, assignments, attendance and other details.

To use the Family Portal, go to and click on the Family Portal box on the lefthand side. All passwords from the previous school year have been reset, for security purposes. Instructions are below for logging in for the 2016-2017 school year. Please check with your student’s school if you have any questions about using Family Portal or wish to discuss the information you find there about your student.

Family Portal for Parents/Guardians:

Login ID: student’s full last name (all lower case, special characters and spaces removed, not to exceed 14 characters) + first initial of student first name + the last 4 digits of the student’s Social Security Number.

Password: Student’s 5-digit lunch number (available from your student, or call the school). This is temporary; the parent will choose a new password the first time they log on. 

Example: Your student is John A. Smith-Jones with the social security number xxx-xx-1234. John’s lunch number is 98765. The login id will be smithjonesj1234 and the temporary password is 98765.

Family Portal for Students:

Login ID: student’s last name (all lower case, special characters and spaces removed, not to exceed 14 characters) + first initial of student first name + the last 5 digits of the student’s local ID number (printed on student schedules and report cards).

Maryland State Parks Will Honor Every Kid in a Park 4th-Grade Passes for the 2016-2017 School Year

Governor Larry Hogan has announced that all 72 Maryland State Parks will honor the federal Every Kid in a Park pass. Fourth graders and their families can access State Parks, as well as Federal sites, for free. Visit  to obtain a pass and find federal parks to visit, for both families accompanying individual 4th graders as well as for field trip experiences for 4th grade classes. The pass grants entry for the student and three accompanying adults - or an entire car for drive-in parks - at more than 2,000 national parks, forests, wildlife refuges, and marine sanctuaries.  The website also offers educators and parents activities, trip planning books, safety and packing tips, and other helpful information.
