Kindergarten Registration/Prekindergarten Application for 2015-2016 School Year Begins May 4 in Schools, WELC
Registration for kindergarten and application for prekindergarten for the 2015-2016 school year will begin on Monday, May 4 at all Wicomico schools with kindergarten and prekindergarten and at the Wicomico Early Learning Center. Parents and guardians will register children at the school they will attend, based on their home address.
Children registering for kindergarten must turn 5 by Sept. 1, 2015. Children applying for prekindergarten must turn 4 by Sept. 1, 2015. (Students currently enrolled in prekindergarten-3, prekindergarten-4, or kindergarten in Wicomico County Public Schools do not need to register.)
May 4 will also mark the opening of 2015-2016 enrollment for children not in public kindergarten now who will be enrolling in the first grade for the 2015-2016 school year.
To register or apply, parents/guardians will need to bring in the following documents:
- a child’s birth certificate or registration of birth
- child’s immunization record
- child’s Social Security card
- two forms of proof-of-residency documentation (current utility bill with service address, AND rental lease, mortgage, or property owner’s tax bill)
- child’s IEP/IFSP (if applicable)
- income verification (for prekindergarten only).
By late April, registration documents will be available online at http://www.wcboe.org/cms/one.aspx?objectId=3238553. For enrollment questions, please contact firstname.lastname@example.org or 410-677-4479.
After May 4, registration and application will continue on weekdays when schools are open for children who will be eligible to enter kindergarten and prekindergarten next year. Parents and guardians are encouraged to register children for 2015-2016 as early as possible, so that families and schools can begin to prepare for the new school year.
A flyer on prekindergarten/kindergarten registration is posted online at www.wcboe.org. Other forms for registration, including some forms in English, Spanish, Korean and Haitian Creole, and immunization requirements, will be available online, at the Board of Education Office, and at schools by the opening of registration.
Children must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2015. Kindergarten is mandatory for all Maryland children who are 5 by this date unless the parents or guardians have completed a Kindergarten-Level of Maturity Waiver Form seeking later admission. For information please contact Sandra Drummond, Early Childhood supervisor, at 410-677-4523 or email@example.com.
Prekindergarten is not mandatory, and is offered to qualified children who will be 4 by Sept. 1, 2015. Prekindergarten is a half-day program throughout Wicomico County except for Prekindergarten at Charles H. Chipman and West Salisbury elementary schools, where children attend the full school day, and for 3- and 4-year-olds in the Judy Center catchment areas of Beaver Run and Pemberton elementary schools; those children are able to participate in full-day prekindergarten at the Wicomico Early Learning Center. (For these families in the Judy Center catchment areas ONLY, prekindergarten services are also available to qualified children who will be 3 by Sept. 1, 2015.)
Priority admission will be given to Wicomico County children and Delmar, Del. children who meet any of these criteria:
- come from low-income, at-risk, or homeless situations
- have prior participation in Head Start
- experience challenges like emergency or health problems, limited English proficiency, or other home or family circumstances
- recommended for the program by government or court referral
Parents or guardians whose child does not meet these criteria can put the child’s name on a prekindergarten waiting list, which will be used to fill any remaining slots. Documentation must be submitted prior to a child’s acceptance into the program. Families will be notified in late summer if space is available.
