Board Approves 2016-2017 School Calendar, with Aug. 29 Start Date for Most Students
Calendar Draft That Drew Most Support is Approved by Board

The Wicomico County Board of Education approved the calendar for the 2016-2017 school year at its April 12 Board meeting. The school year will begin on Monday, Aug. 29 for most students. The approved calendar is posted at www.wcboe.org, and may be accessed from the link at left.

The Board collected input for three months prior to this week’s final vote on the calendar. Draft B, which was the draft approved on 1st and final readings by the Board, had the greatest support from the several hundred people who submitted comments or a calendar preference.

The approved calendar begins the school year on Monday, Aug. 29 for most students and ends the school year on Friday, June 9, 2017.

Dates on the 2016-2017 school calendar:

Aug. 22: Teachers report

Aug. 24: Assistants and nurses report

Aug. 25: Only Central Office and school offices open

Aug. 29: First day of school for Wicomico students in grades 1-6 and grade 9 (Grade 6 only at Mardela Middle and High, all grades report at Pittsville Elementary and Middle) Prekindergarten/Kindergarten students report as assigned by school throughout this week.

Aug. 30: All Wicomico students grades 1-12 in school

Sept. 5 (Labor Day): Schools and Central Office closed

Oct. 21: Professional Day, schools closed for students. Teachers will have the opportunity to attend the Maryland State Education Association Convention for training activities for part of this professional day.

Nov. 1: Professional Day, schools closed for students

Nov. 8 (General Election): Schools and Central Office closed

Nov. 23-25: Thanksgiving break, schools and Central Office closed

Dec. 19-Dec. 30: Schools closed for winter holiday break. Schools close at regular time Friday, Dec. 16, and reopen Monday, Jan. 2. Central Office/school offices open Dec. 19-21 and 27-29.

Jan. 16 (Martin Luther King Jr. Birthday): Schools and Central Office closed

Jan. 26-27: Professional days, schools closed for students.

Jan. 26: Evening High School commencement

Feb. 20 (Presidents Day): Schools and Central Office closed

April 3: Professional Day, schools closed for students

April 14 and 17: Schools and Central Office closed for spring holiday break

May 25: Evening High School commencement

May 29 (Memorial Day): Schools and Central Office closed

June 2: Commencement ceremony for Mardela High

June 3: Commencement ceremonies for Parkside High, Wicomico High and James M. Bennett High

June 7, 8, 9: Early dismissal days for students

June 9: Last day of school for students, instructional assistants, nurses

June 12: Last day for teachers and 10-month (220-day) employees

June 16: Report cards mailed
