Wicomico Finishes Off a Great School Year with Biggest Awards Night Ever at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Groundbreaking for the Replacement West Salisbury Elementary Thursday
Posted on 06/07/2016

Wicomico’s high schools celebrated commencement over the weekend, but during this last full week of school there will be plenty of other events to celebrate as the Wicomico County Public School System wraps up a great year.

Thursday will be the last day of school ever at the current West Salisbury Elementary School building, and students, staff, and guests from the state, county, city and community will start the day by breaking ground for the replacement school. The festivities start at 9 a.m. with a schoolwide photo, turning the dirt to break ground, and a ceremony at 10 a.m. Students will take home a souvenir shovel to commemorate their contribution to helping building the new school, which is scheduled to open in time for the 2018-2019 school year thanks to construction funding from Wicomico County and the State of Maryland.

(Note: Thursday, June 9 is the last day of school for several schools due to upcoming construction and relocation projects. That will be the last day of school for students at West Salisbury Elementary, North Salisbury Elementary, Charles H. Chipman Elementary and Wicomico Middle. For the rest of the school system, the last day of school will be Tuesday, June 14, with early dismissal days on June 10, 13 and 14.)

The fourth and final Wicomico County Board of Education Awards & Recognitions Night of the 2015-2016 school year will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 7 in the James M. Bennett Auditorium in Salisbury. The program is packed with great achievements by students and staff, and great contributions by community partners. And there’s a special attraction: From 6-6:20 p.m., the Wicomico County Robotics Team The Tec Tigers that went all the way to the FIRST Robotics World Championship will demonstrate its robot on the stage. The team and its supporters will be recognized during the evening’s program.
