Congratulations to the Students, Teachers and Schools Honored at the April 21 Board of Education Awards & Recognitions Night

The spring Wicomico County Board of Education Awards & Recognitions Night was held April 21, 2009 at Salisbury Middle School.

The Board recognized teachers, students, community partners, schools and departments for the following achievements:

 Recognition for Athletic Achievement‚ Coach Barbara McCool, Girls Head Basketball Coach at Mardela High School, outstanding career achievement of reaching the milestone of 600 Varsity wins in the state of Maryland. McCool was recently recognized by the Maryland State Athletic Directors Association as the "District VIII Athletic Director of the Year." McCool received a Governor's Citation and House Resolution in her honor.

2009-2010 Wicomico Teacher of the Year‚ Susan L. Cullen, 3rd grade teacher at Delmar Elementary School, announced March 19 as Wicomico Teacher of the Year. She will represent Wicomico at the Maryland Teacher of the Year Gala. Cullen received a Governor's Citation and House Resolution in her honor.

Maryland Elementary School Counselor of the Year‚ Tana Ellis, school counselor at Prince Street Elementary School, recognized by the Maryland School Counselors Association as the Elementary School Counselor of the Year for the state of Maryland. Ellis received a Governor's Citation and House Resolution in her honor.

2009 Maryland Music Teacher of the Year‚ James Gary Hammer, band director at Bennett Middle School, for receiving the prestigious Maryland Music Educators Association "Award for Excellence" as the Outstanding Career Music Teacher for 2009. Hammer received a Governor's Citation and House Resolution in his honor.

WMDT's "Teachers Who Make A Difference" Award‚ Three Wicomico teachers have recently received the WMDT "Teacher Who Makes a Difference" Award:

National Board Certified Teacher‚ Kristen Briggs, grade 3 Magnet teacher at North Salisbury Elementary School, achieved the designation of National Certified Teacher. Wicomico has eight newly nationally certified teachers this school year.

Wicomico County Council of PTAs Collaborative Partnership‚ Wicomico County Council of PTAs, in recognition and grateful appreciation of its collaborative partnership and its efforts with multiple projects including Legislative Night, Reflections Art Program and the Wicomico County Stadium Sign.

Safety on the Job Poster Contest‚ Winners in the Delmarva Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers 1st Annual Local "Safety on the Job" Poster Contest, all from Fruitland Intermediate:

3rd Place - Nathaniel Grudzien

Ben Carson Scholarship Recipients
Tmyah Davis, fifth-grade student at Prince Street Elementary, and Nathaniel Vincent, fifth-grade student at Delmar Elementary, 2009 Carson Scholars. They will be honored at a banquet in Baltimore April 26 and will receive a $1,000 scholarship for college.

Bookworms Over Broadway Reading Award‚ Tara Bramble, 8th grade student at Mardela Middle and High School, winner of the Bookworms Over Broadway reading competition sponsored by the Salisbury Wicomico Arts Council and the Wicomico Public Library.

Glen Avenue Elementary's Life Saver‚ Douglas Buck, a student at Glen Avenue Elementary, recognized for receiving the National Meritorious Award for Life Saving presented by the Boy Scouts of America for quick thinking and heroic actions in service to others. He came to the aid of a teacher during a health crisis in the classroom last year. A member of Boy Scout Troop 478 in Salisbury, Buck also visited the White House as part of a national contingent of outstanding Scouts.

Maryland Geography Bee Participants‚ Jordan Kilgore, Grade 5, North Salisbury School, and Nicholas Selser, Grade 4, Pemberton Elementary School, for qualifying for and participating in the Maryland Geography Bee.

State of Maryland International Reading Association Council's Young Authors' Contest
Alison Sahler, Grade 3, North Salisbury Elementary, won 2nd place in the state competition for her short story, "The Visions"

Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation Finalist‚ Derek Wu, a senior at James M. Bennett High School, the only Maryland scholar selected as a National Scholar by the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation. He will receive a scholarship in the amount of $20,000. Wu and Coke representative Matt Griffith presented Kaye Reichenberg of James M. Bennett High with the Educator of Distinction Award that Coca-Cola Scholars bestow on an outstanding teacher.
